Publisher's summary

When seven murder victims are found in a small town, the homicide investigation shakes a small-town sheriff to her core in James Patterson's tense thriller.

Once a luxurious Southern getaway on a rustic lake, then reduced to a dilapidated crash pad, the Summer House is now the grisly scene of a nighttime mass murder. Eyewitnesses point to four Army Rangers - known as the Night Ninjas - recently returned from Afghanistan.

To ensure that justice is done, the Army sends Major Jeremiah Cook, a veteran and former NYPD cop, to investigate. But the major and his elite team arrive in sweltering Georgia with no idea their grim jobs will be made exponentially more challenging by local law enforcement, who resists the Army's intrusion and stonewall them at every turn.

As Cook and his squad struggle to uncover the truth behind the condemning evidence, the pieces just won't fit - and forces are rallying to make certain damning secrets die alongside the victims in the murder house. With his own people in the cross-hairs, Cook takes a desperate gamble to find answers - even if it means returning to a hell of his own worst nightmares....

Not as good as expected by hype.

I was looking forward to this book after hearing so much about it from reviews. For starters, 3 minutes into the book, when he refers to a vehicle as a "Toyota Sentra" it had me skeptical about how the rest of the story was going to turn out. I'm sure there was a ton of back ground homework done for this novel just like any other good read, but really? Nissan makes the Sentra, not Toyota, not to nit pick here but no one caught that during editing or research? To me it's as bad as if he said "Chevy Mustang" , it just threw me off from the start. How can you mess that up and no one catch it during proof reading? As far as the story , I did enjoy it for the most part, it was kind of slow at the beginning but finally towards the end it picked up finally, of course for it to work out right? "Super Easy, barely an inconvenience", but I think there was much pandering going on. It doesn't matter to me if the entire team was all women or men or what race they are whatever, but you have to hit all the bases right? The Latino cop from L.A. , the black JAG officer, the Asian doctor, the woman and the Major with the bum leg? The diverse team of investigators and the stereo typical ignorant southern racists. I know racism is still an issue in the south, but is it necessary to portray most of the southern characters as racists? How many characters in the novel had to refer to the Lt. as a "China man" ? The hand holding with the story line, the over explanation of some things or repetition, (yes, we know the Major was a cop in NYC, why explain that to us 4 times?) everyone ready to break the rules and risk their lives or career over the Major's crusade based on a hunch? I wanted to like this book more than I did. I suppose my review is more due to my disappointment in general, I hope others had a better experience, again maybe the screw up, within the first 3 minutes, just made me extra skeptical. .

Language

I would love to read contemporary books but I can’t get past the language. I would think you could find a better way to describe intense situations without using the Lords name in vain.

Enjoyable with twists and turns

I really enjoyed this book. I love a good mystery but was worried after reading other reviews, however, the book and the narrator were both great. The narrator did a decent job of 'getting into character' by changing his voice. I could actually get a visual of the men and women. I recommend this book on Audible. Patterson described the characters in full detail which helped you relate to the characters. A few things were left unanswered, sequel maybe?

Insulting

Insultingly stereotypical towards the south. Every character from GA is a caricature or racism or ignorance.

Page Turner!

great read I haven't read much Patterson lately, but that will change. Ari Fliakos is at the top of my list of great narrator's.
