Sympathy with the sea, with the weird, and with monsters fills the stories of Imperfect Commentaries. Ruthanna Emrys' collection offers listeners feminist and #ownvoices Neo-Lovecraftian fiction, anthropological science fiction, and fantasies of belonging, plus miscellaneous deleted scenes, poems, and secret story origins. Listeners familiar with her novels (Winter Tide and Deep Roots) will see the first appearance of Aphra Marsh, an Innsmouth survivor, still recovering from her losses and making a life for herself in late-1940s San Francisco in "The Litany of Earth."

Ruthanna Emrys has a deft way with words. These stories bring you to places you never expected to be and leaves you to wander. I thoroughly loved getting to hear the short fiction related to her novels. If you enjoy well written characters outside the norms and deeply thoughtful situations you will love these stories.

Outstanding collection of stories

As with all short story collections, there is a range of stories. Some are a little dull, others are fascinating seeds or stories that leave you wanting more, and there is a large variety of creative stories. As someone who only knew the author’s Lovecraft adjacent writing, I particularly enjoyed the story about immortal, nanotechnology enhanced jesters, and the fascinating story about scientific discovery amongst the scientists of a species entirely unlike our own.

A wildly creative and varied collection
