Meister Eckhart (1260-1328) was a priest, a mystic, and nearly a heretic (he died before the Church court's verdict). In the 20th century, the Roman Catholic Church rehabilitated him and the late Pope John Paul II spoke of his work with fondness.
However, what makes him of particular interest is the fact that he has influenced a wide range of spiritual teachers and mystics both inside and outside the Christian tradition. Erich Fromm, Eckhart Tolle, Richard Rohr, D. T. Suzuki, and Rudolf Steiner have all credited Eckhart as being an important influence on their thought. Consisting of eight stanzas, each of five lines, the poem outlines the journey in pursuit of divine union, within which the only source of light comes from the soul. It doesn’t get much better
If you read Meister Eckhart without knowing his background, you would likely guess he were an Eastern mystic. These teachings are likewise timeless, as they are simple and personal.
That they labeled him a heretic in the church for his message is intriguing on its own, and the way these writings are structured are perfect in their conciseness.
His message is one of someone who clearly knew God from experience rather than faith alone.
