Excellent Read for Anyone Interested in African American History

I loved everything about this book. For years, I have loved studying black history and as a Memphian, I particularly loved hearing about Ida B Wells, and Emmett Till. The way that the author makes an analogy between the cross, and the lunching tree is absolutely beautifully true. I love that he talks about the song, “ Strange Fruit” by Billie Holiday, as that is also one of my favorite songs as well because it is so overwhelmingly haunting, and I love that he touched on the fact that many people at the time did not understand it initially. And I took footnotes and more footnotes I found, as I was listening to the book to delve deeper more subjects to listen to for example, I would like to read a biography on WEB DeBois, I would love to read a biography on Fannie Lou Hamer, and I would love to read the “Miseducation of the Negro”. For anyone else that loves to read about black history or particularly about Emmett Till or the south, I also recommend a book called “The Barn” by Wright Thompson. I can’t wait to read more by James H. Cone.

I was captivated by this book. I could not stop listening. This book speaks loudly and allowed me as a pastor to use the thoughts and imagery within book to contribute to sermon topics. This book was well put together and forces one to juxtapose Jesus Cross with the Lynching Tree. A must read.
