A KILLER WITH A MESSAGE. On the streets of Cork, beggars are being horrifically murdered. But why would anyone want to kill the city's homeless? It's up to DS Katie Maguire to find out. A CRUSADE AGAINST CRUELTY. Katie's fiancé is fighting his own battle: against illegal puppy farming, a lucrative black market run by Ireland's most fearsome gangs. I’m not sure about this author. He writes horror unbeknownst to me. I love this narrator and have purchased quite a few of her books as she reads Dervla McTiernan, DI Cormac Reilly books. So without reading up on this author, I purchased the last three in this series read by the narrator. I couldn’t understand why I had trouble with this book so of course I went back and read the reviews of all three books I purchased. Oh my goodness, make no mistake they are well written, and like Karin Slaughter books you must have a strong stomach. Graphic descriptions so this is no Light mystery reading. Make sure you read the other reviews on this author before you buy. I love the Karin Slaughter Will Trent series and own all the books. I own most of the grant County series, but there are a few of those books I have yet to listen to. This author intrigues me, but I won’t buy any more of his work and I will finish the three books I purchased. I love Ireland. I miss the brown bread, the lovely lovely tea, but this author shows the dark dark side of Ireland that I have never been exposed to in my travels there.
Where are my comments of help?

Wow. I’m an avid consumer of international crime fiction and absolutely love the narrator, Aoife McMahon, which is why I downloaded this book. The protagonist, Katie Maguire, is a likable character, but the author punishes her cruelly. In previous books, her husband died, her child died, and her lover cheats on her. SPOILER ALERT!!! In this book alone, cheating lover reappears as her boss, her new fiancé is gelded during a beating, then same fiancé suicide bombs the people responsible for his beating, and the story ends with former cheating lover raping Katie. Never mind what the rest of the book is about. Enough said-I’ll never read another thing by this author.

Is the author a misogynist? Awful…

Way too graphic and far too much going on. The narrator did a decent job but the source material was garbage. The only positive I can say is that the author did his research on the local geography but apart from that, it was a brutal listen.

The plot was ridiculous
