When the father he never knew shows up at his house in the middle of the night, beaten and his body mutilated, with only a vague explanation of what happened to him, Somerton County Deputy John Lee Quarrels suspects there's more to the story than he is being told. And when his father just as mysteriously disappears two days later, John Lee knows there is trouble in store for him.

It doesn't take long for it to show up. Soon, he receives a late-night visit by thugs from out of town, his home is burglarized, and he is being threatened by a mysterious caller who claims John Lee has something that belongs to him and will do whatever it takes to get it back.

Those aren't his only problems! He is still dealing with his complicated personal life, what with his estranged wife dropping in for unannounced sleepovers and her oversexed sister coming by to tempt him, his pot-smoking ponytailed grandfather, his Elvis-obsessed grandmother, and his being the target of Chief Deputy Flag Newton's animosity.

The mystery begins to unravel when the FBI comes calling, revealing just how deeply involved he has unwittingly become in his father's troubles. But there's a lot more in store for John Lee before this tale of intrigue reaches its dramatic conclusion.

As sultry as a Florida back road in August, as mysterious as the South's live oak trees dripping with Spanish moss, and as deadly as a copperhead strike, the second audiobook in New York Times best-selling author Nick Russell's new John Lee Quarrels series will keep you listening late into the night.

Lots of action in this story. John Lee’s estranged father shows up, running from a drug dealer. Can John Lee survive the wrath of a drug dealer searching for his money? Another fantastic story in this series.

Drugs and money

Poor John Lee Quarrels, he gets himself in such a mess. (Through no fault of his own.)
Still love the one liners.

've gotten hooked on this mystery series involving a Florida Deputy Sheriff in a small town where everybody knows your name. In each entry, the town itself and its inhabitants are all characters themselves. The sheriff is John Lee Quarrels someday to be ex-father in law. The daughter/wife left John Lee for another woman but wants to be a friend with benefits to him. Her sister has also gotten involved in a no strings attached way. His dead best friend's sister is his current best friend and partner most of the time and she has a crush on him and more. One of the characters who is just awful enough to both hate and laugh about is the Chief Deputy who is a loose cannon and brother in law to the Sheriff with lots to say about the sheriff. John Lee's mother had him at age 18, was married to his father for 2 years and after they split up, she left her parents, old hippy types to raise him.

In this entry, his bio dad, who John Lee does not know, comes into his life and brings some extremely dangerous people who are after dad into the town in a way that impacts many folks. This entry is particularly violent but the violence is necessary to the story and we do get some relief from the quirky parts of the town's dynamics. These are NOT comic novels so much as novels where humanity in its full range is displayed and therefore it can be pure evil, just obnoxious, or sweet and loving. Good series!

Quirky town, great characters, violent story
