In 1844, two years before the Donner Party, the Stevens-Murphy company left Missouri to be the first wagons into California through the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Mostly Irish Catholics, the party sought religious freedom and education in the mission-dominated land and enjoyed a safe journey - until October, when a heavy snowstorm forced difficult decisions. The first of many for young Mary Sullivan, newlywed Sarah Montgomery, the widow Ellen Murphy, and her pregnant sister-in-law Maolisa.

When the party separates in three directions, each risks losing those they love and faces the prospect of learning that adversity can destroy or redefine. Two women and four men go overland around Lake Tahoe, three men stay to guard the heaviest wagons - and the rest of the party, including eight women and 17 children, huddle in a makeshift cabin at the headwaters of the Yuba River waiting for rescue...or their deaths.

I really enjoyed this book, loved that is based on true events, a story of heartbreak, forgiveness, sorrow, lost, starting over and finding peace and love. The author takes you away to another time when times were hard, lost was great and love meant something, when people looked after their neighbors and helped get through hard times. When family move on and may not see each other again. It was a breath taking story that touched my heart.

The narrator did a great job pulling the listener in, love her character voices, you always knew who was talking and what they were feeling. Her normal voice is lovely, it is a voice you don't get tired of listening to. There are no volume changes, no repeating of words and no background noises. It was truly a delightful listen that was very clear and enjoyable.

Not as good as her other one but was interesting

The journeys, the hardships and the friendships along the way made this so enjoyable. Like you mentioned hard to keep track of everyone so ready to read again,

I didn't know these parties were stranded and starving before the Donner Party. How sad that the Donner Party didn't learn from this party's experiences. The narration was pleasant to listen to, and the story, although so very sad, was written in terms descriptive enough to be accurate while at the same time, not too gory. Sad and real, but so interesting.

Sad but interesting

Love all of her books. The reader did a great job with all the accents. I really liked having the historical info at the end.

Favorite author!

It’s hard to imagine today, and few of us could even attempt such abandon in search of a better life. Modern day folk are quite lazy!

Excellent portrayal of the strength and fortitude of the early pioneers.
