Rex Dexter is itching to have a dog. He was practically born to have one. His name is Rex, for crying out loud. It's a dog's name. Any pooch is preferable, but a chocolate Labrador is the pinnacle. The best of the best. The dream of all dreams. When Rex's B-Day for Me-Day finally arrives, his parents surprise him with a box. A box with holes. A box with holes and adorable scratchy noises coming from inside. Could it be? Yes! It has to be! A...a...chicken? Pet poultry? How clucky.

One hour and 14 minutes later, the chicken is dead (by a steamroller), Rex is cursed (by the Grim Reaper), and wild animals are haunting Rex's room (hounding him for answers). Even his best friend, Darvish, is not going to believe this, and that kid believes everything. Rex's uninvited ghostly guests are a chatty, messy bunch. And they need Rex to solve their mysterious deadly departures from the Middling Falls Zoo before it happens again. But how?

New York Times best-selling author Aaron Reynolds delivers a wickedly funny debut title in the Incredibly Dead Pets of Rex Dexter series.

The Incredibly Dead Pets of Rex Dexter is a highly entertaining, chaotic middle-grade mystery that balances a bizarre premise with plenty of humor. While the mystery kept me engaged, it was truly the exceptional audiobook narration that brought this story to life.

My Reactions & Emotions:
The Narrator Carried the Show: Christopher Gebauer’s narration absolutely made this book for me. He infused the performance with the perfect amount of "gumption" to capture Rex's specific brand of chaotic energy, elevating the entire reading experience.
A Patient Best Friend: To be completely frank, Rex was a pretty terrible friend from beginning to end! His buddy, Darvish, deserves an award for everything he puts up with throughout the story.
Satisfying Comedy: Because Rex is so self-absorbed, my absolute favorite moment was when a girl in his class completely "out-alpha'd" him. Rex's reaction to being put in his place was pure comedy gold.
Late-Game Redemption: While he spends most of the book being frustratingly self-centered, I did appreciate that Rex shows some genuine character growth right at the very end. It was nice to see him finally start to turn things around.

Constructive Criticism:
The mystery itself was a bit predictable, as I managed to guess the culprit about halfway through the book. Because the main character can be a bit exhausting to deal with for the majority of the plot, this lands as a "one-and-done" for me rather than a story I would care to revisit in the future.

Final Thoughts:
This is a genuinely interesting and funny story that middle-grade readers will likely devour. While it isn't a reread for me personally, the fantastic voice work, the fun macabre humor, and Rex's final bit of growth made it well worth the time. A very solid 4 stars!

My son read this last year in 4th grade for a bluebonnet project. Like most kids his age, reading isn't as fun as video games, and he isn't a strong reader, but he couldn't stop listening to this book, he loved it and made an A on his project! Super fun-lighthearted read. If you are worried it won't be a good fit because of the title, don't be, its a family friendly book that we still say quotes from at home. Awesome book, very well written.

So stinking cute and fun
