Il protagonista, un eremita dai capelli ormai bianchi, rianima una sera tre figure di amici di gioventù.

Il primo è stato terrorista e poi muratore in Francia: rievoca il primo assassinio commesso dal complice-amico. Con intensa drammaticità parla della violenza. Il secondo ha scelto la strada della vita religiosa che lo porterà in Africa, dove uomini, animali e cose hanno "il sapore dell'aceto" e per questo del dolore. Il terzo è un vagabondo, sempre provvisorio, di passaggio in un'esistenza che non dà requie.
