Publisher's summary
Winner of the Pulitzer Prize
“A masterwork . . . the novel astonishes with its inventiveness . . . it is nothing less than a grand comic fugue.”—The New York Times Book Review
A green hunting cap squeezed the top of the fleshy balloon of a head. The green earflaps, full of large ears and uncut hair and the fine bristles that grew in the ears themselves, stuck out on either side like turn signals indicating two directions at once. Full, pursed lips protruded beneath the bushy black moustache and, at their corners, sank into little folds filled with disapproval and potato chip crumbs.
So enters one of the most memorable characters in recent American fiction.
The hero of John Kennedy Toole's incomparable, Pultizer Prize–winning comic classic is one Ignatius J. Reilly, an obese, self-absorbed, hapless Don Quixote of the French Quarter, whose half-hearted attempts at employment lead to a series of wacky adventures among the lower denizens of New Orleans. This book has become an American comic masterpiece.

Set in Italy during World War II, this is the story of the incomparable, malingering bombardier Yossarian, a hero who is furious because thousands of people he has never met are trying to kill him. Yet if Yossarian makes any attempt to excuse himself from the perilous missions he's assigned, he'll be in violation of Catch-22.

Story
In Las Vegas to cover a motorcycle race, Raoul Duke (Thompson) and his attorney Dr. Gonzo (inspired by a friend of Thompson) are quickly diverted to search for the American dream. Their quest is fueled by nearly every drug imaginable and quickly becomes a surreal experience that blurs the line between reality and fantasy. But there is more to this hilarious tale than reckless behavior, for underneath the hallucinogenic facade is a stinging criticism of American greed and consumerism.

You can't say yes—it would be too awkward—and you can't say no—it would look like defeat. On your desk are a series of invitations to half-baked literary events around the world. Story
Of all of John Irving's books, this is the one that lends itself best to audio. In print, Owen Meany's dialogue is set in capital letters; for this production, Irving himself selected Joe Barrett to deliver Meany's difficult voice as intended. In the summer of 1953, two 11-year-old boys – best friends – are playing in a Little League baseball game in Gravesend, New Hampshire. One of the boys hits a foul ball that kills the other boy's mother. The boy who hits the ball doesn't believe in accidents; Owen Meany believes he is God's instrument. What happens to Owen after that 1953 foul ball is extraordinary and terrifying.

When he emerged he had under his arm a manuscript, a genre-smashing book about comedy, tragedy, love, loss, war, and redemption. When asked if this was the celebrity memoir, Norm replied, “Call it anything you damn like.”

Set in Italy during World War II, this is the story of the incomparable, malingering bombardier Yossarian, a hero who is furious because thousands of people he has never met are trying to kill him. But his real problem is not the enemy - it is his own army, which keeps increasing the number of missions the men must fly to complete their service. Yet if Yossarian makes any attempt to excuse himself from the perilous missions he's assigned, he'll be in violation of Catch-22.

Story
John Kennedy Toole - who won a posthumous Pulitzer Prize for his best-selling comic masterpiece A Confederacy of Dunces - wrote The Neon Bible for a literary contest at the age of 16. The manuscript languished in a drawer and became the subject of a legal battle among Toole's heirs. It was only in 1989, 35 years after it was written and 20 years after Toole's suicide at 31, that this amazingly accomplished and evocative novel was freed for publication.

Story
Admired by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Dorothy Parker, and Dashiell Hammett, and hailed as one of the best 100 English-language novels by Time magazine, The Day of the Locust continues to influence American writers, artists, and culture. Bob Dylan wrote the classic song "Day of the Locusts" in homage, and Matt Groening's Homer Simpson is named after one of its characters. No novel more perfectly captures the nuttier side of Hollywood. Here the lens is turned on its fringes-actors out of work, film extras with big dreams, and parents lining their children up for small roles.

Flannery O’Connor’s astonishing and haunting first novel is a classic of 20th-century literature. It is the story of Hazel Motes, a 22-year-old caught in an unending struggle against his innate, desperate faith. He falls under the spell of a “blind” street preacher named Asa Hawks and his degenerate fifteen-year-old daughter. In an ironic, malicious gesture of his own non-faith, and to prove himself a greater cynic than Hawks, Hazel founds The Church of God Without Christ but is still thwarted in his efforts to lose God.

Miss Lonelyhearts is an unnamed male newspaper columnist writing an advice column, which is viewed by the newspaper as a joke. As "Miss Lonelyhearts" reads letters from desperate New Yorkers, he feels terribly burdened and falls into a cycle of deep depression, accompanied by heavy drinking and occasional barfights. The novel is essentially a black comedy and is characterized by an extremely dark but clever sense of humor and irony.

Excellent and entertaining
This work won the Pulitzer Prize for 1981, sadly the author unable to face rejection of this novel ended his life in 1969. Where he gave up on life, his mother who believed in him preserved to have this novel read and published. The literary world owes her a debt of gratitude for this is a wonderfully written poignant novel. For me, the work is about relationships. The author creates a protagonist who is considered an adult, but as the story unfolds we find a not to likeable overgrown child who uses manipulation and when his schemes don't pan out his way cries “victim”. A mother who enables him for the most part but she herself is totally lacking in the domestic department, much easier to pacify him than deal with him. As the story progresses his antics grow out of control and as different characters are brought into fray we have quite a lot of scenarios being tossed into the pot, be sure to duck when it starts to boil over. I found it delightful, quite humorous and even sadly disturbing. I listened to the Audible of this work, performed by Barrett Whittener and he was simply brilliant in bringing the characters and the story to life and highly entertaining.

Thank you PBS “great American read” for bringing this work to my attention. I laughed with exuberance and was throughly appalled at the slurs and insults prodigiously expounded by the outlandish characters. A book I will remember for years.

entertaining story, horrible narration
the book was great but the narrator was absolutely terrible. I found his ethnic accents to be very distracting. all the black characters and the one Latina all sounded like an offensive cliche of a Chinese accent for some reason. I believe ibwill skip any books that are read by this hack in the future. he very nearly ruined what was supposed to be a funny and satirical tale by turning the characters into crude stereotypes.

A Confederacy of Dunces is one of my all time favorite books. I read it every couple of years. This year, I decided to buy the Audiobook, and I am so glad I did! The performance was amazing, and there were things I noticed listening to the book that I had not noticed reading it. You don't ever skim when listening, so you hear every word. It is honestly difficult to describe this book...It is a masterfully written comedy where you will love to hate the main character, Ignatius, but then weirdly understand him and recognize him as someone from your life. Just read the book, it’s worth it.

Great reader for a fun read
I still don’t know why this is considered such a great book, but the reader helped me enjoy it more than reading it on my own. It is a fun book even if none of the characters are particularly likeable.
