A Wonderful Coming of Age Story

The story works its way into your heart. Ben, the young protagonist, is a prickly pear of a child. For one so young, he is very set in his ways, very stubborn. His attempts to be stoic simply end in alienation and depression. But this is a story of growth, of a human mind learning to cope with the real world and to take joy in it. Even the grandmother who at first seems cold and unfeeling actually has a much more likeable side than was first revealed. In the middle I thought I would give up am now so glad that I stuck with it Throughout it all, high points and low, there is always the wonderful, soothing voice of the narrator. She carries you along, keeping you engaged and finally Ben learns that reality can be much better than what you wished for.
