Publisher's summary
A Dog's Purpose - the number one New York Times best seller and major motion picture - is a perfect gift to introduce dog lovers to this wonderful series.
Based on the beloved best-selling novel by W. Bruce Cameron, A Dog's Purpose, from director Lasse Hallström (The Cider House Rules, Dear John, The 100-Foot Journey), shares the soulful and surprising story of one devoted dog (voiced by Josh Gad) who finds the meaning of his own existence through the lives of the humans he teaches to laugh and love.
The family film told from the dog's perspective also stars Britt Robertson, KJ Apa, John Ortiz, Peggy Lipton, Juliet Rylance, Luke Kirby, Pooch Hall and Dennis Quaid. A Dog's Purpose is produced by Gavin Polone (Zombieland, TV's Gilmore Girls). The film from Amblin Entertainment and Walden Media will be distributed by Universal Pictures. Screenplay by W. Bruce Cameron & Cathryn Michon and Audrey Wells and Maya Forbes & Wally Wolodarsky.
Heartwarming, insightful, and often laugh-out-loud funny, A Dog's Purpose is not only the emotional and hilarious story of a dog's many lives, but also a dog's-eye commentary on human relationships and the unbreakable bonds between man and man's best friend. This moving and beautifully crafted story teaches us that love never dies, that our true friends are always with us, and that every creature on earth is born with a purpose.
Bailey's story continues in A Dog's Journey, the charming New York Times and USA Today best-selling direct sequel to A Dog's Purpose.

Story
You’ve probably never met someone like Clancy. He’s keeping a diary, he’s falling in love, there are rivals for his affections, he lives with his best friend and his worst enemy—even taken together, these factors are maybe not that unusual, except that Clancy is a dog. His point of view is therefore perhaps…different. Told in Cameron’s signature style, a tremendous cast of wonderful characters find themselves jointly and separately navigating the challenges of life, of love, and…other pets, including Clancy's “worst enemy”—one very disdainful cat.

John and Jenny were just beginning their life together. They were young and in love, with a perfect little house and not a care in the world. Then they brought home Marley, a wriggly yellow furball of a puppy. Life would never be the same. Marley quickly grew into a barreling, 97-pound streamroller of a Labrador retriever. He crashed through screen doors, gouged through drywall, and stole women's undergarments. Obedience school did no good - Marley was expelled.

But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove’s mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul.

When South African conservationist Lawrence Anthony was asked to accept a herd of "rogue" wild elephants on his Thula Thula game reserve in Zululand, his common sense told him to refuse. But he was the herd's last chance of survival: they would be killed if he wouldn't take them. In order to save their lives, Anthony took them in. In the years that followed he became a part of their family. And as he battled to create a bond with the elephants, he came to realize that they had a great deal to teach him about life, loyalty, and freedom.

Every dog lover knows the feeling. The nuzzle of a dog’s nose, the warmth of them lying at our feet, even their whining when they want to get up on the bed. It really seems like our dogs love us, too. But for years, scientists have resisted that conclusion, warning against anthropomorphizing our pets. Enter Clive Wynne, a pioneering canine behaviorist whose research is helping to usher in a new era: one in which love, not intelligence or submissiveness, is at the heart of the human-canine relationship.

After loosing Harvey boy, our family dog and my parents, this book lifted my spirits and helped me to realize Harvey had a great life and was loved by them and all of us. A beautiful story and wonderful perspective on how a dog might see the world. And hope that someday and somehow it will all make sense, coming together for a great ending.

A Novel To Die For
I used this book as a novel study book. This book is a tremendous novel. The book I have that I used quite often to read during school has many tear stains, however many pages also carry laughs and smiles within them as well.

Did my dog write this book???
Would you listen to A Dog's Purpose again? Why?
I could listen to this audible 100 times over again and never get tired of it! It is such a happy-go-lucky book that can make anyone's day better.
What did you like best about this story?
For anyone who has ever owned or loved a dog, this book is like hearing your dog's perspective on life out loud. It made me laugh, cry, and smile! This is a story about a dog, told by a dog, and it makes you feel like it was also written by a dog. My only complaint is that the sad parts are SAD, and running on a treadmill while listening to those parts is not advised when surrounded by people who you don't want to think you're crazy.
Have you listened to any of William Dufris’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have never heard any of his performances, but I don't know that there could have been a better voice for the characters in this book. He does an excellent dog voice!
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Doodle Dog
