"Life changes fast....You sit down to dinner and life as you know it ends." These were among the first words Joan Didion wrote in January 2004. Her daughter was lying unconscious in an intensive care unit, a victim of pneumonia and septic shock. Her husband, John Gregory Dunne, was dead. The night before New Year's Eve, while they were sitting down to dinner, he suffered a massive and fatal coronary. The two had lived and worked side by side for nearly 40 years.

Story
One of the 20th century's enduring works, One Hundred Years of Solitude is a widely beloved and acclaimed novel known throughout the world and the ultimate achievement in a Nobel Prize-winning career. The novel tells the story of the rise and fall of the mythical town of Macondo through the history of the Buendía family. Rich and brilliant, it is a chronicle of life, death, and the tragicomedy of humankind. In the beautiful, ridiculous, and tawdry story of the Buendía family, one sees all of humanity, just as in the history, myths, growth, and decay of Macondo, one sees all of Latin America.

Story
Back when restaurant menus were still printed on paper, and wearing a mask—or not—was a decision made mostly on Halloween, David Sedaris spent his time doing normal things. As Happy-Go-Lucky opens, he is learning to shoot guns with his sister, visiting muddy flea markets in Serbia, buying gummy worms to feed to ants, and telling his nonagenarian father wheelchair jokes. But then the pandemic hits, and like so many others, he’s stuck in lockdown, unable to tour and read for audiences, the part of his work he loves most.

It’s 2011, and Samuel Andresen-Anderson—college professor, stalled writer—has a Nix of his own: his mother, Faye. He hasn’t seen her in decades, not since she abandoned the family when he was a boy. Now she’s re-appeared, having committed an absurd crime that electrifies the nightly news, beguiles the internet, and inflames a politically divided country. The media paints Faye as a radical hippie with a sordid past, but as far as Samuel knows, his mother was an ordinary girl who married her high-school sweetheart.

Marina Keegan's star was on the rise when she graduated magna cum laude from Yale in May 2012. She had a play that was to be produced at the New York International Fringe Festival and a job waiting for her at the New Yorker. Tragically, five days after graduation, Marina died in a car crash. Even though she was just 22 when she died, Marina left behind a rich, expansive trove of prose that, like her title essay, captures the hope, uncertainty, and possibility of her generation.

If you had to name a statue, any statue, odds are good you'd mention the Statue of Liberty. Have you seen her? She's in New York. She's holding a torch. And she's in mid-stride, moving forward. But why? In this fascinating and fun take on nonfiction, Dave Eggers investigates a seemingly small trait of America's most emblematic statue. What he finds is about more than history, more than art. What he finds in the Statue of Liberty's right foot is the powerful message of acceptance that is essential of an entire country's creation.

Story
The Golden Gate Bridge is the most famous bridge in the world. It is also, not entirely coincidentally, the world's first bright-orange bridge. But it wasn't supposed to be that way. In this book, bridge lover Dave Eggers tells the story of how it happened - how a bridge that some people wanted to be red and white, and some people wanted to be yellow and black, and most people wanted simply to be gray, instead became, thanks to the vision and stick-to-itiveness of a few peculiar architects, one of the most memorable man-made objects ever created.

Unlikeable narration
I keep trying to get through this book, but the narration is so grating I keep stopping. There are a lot of different ways he could have gone with this, but the way he chose makes the character so unlikeable I just don’t want to continue. More and more I avoid these more performative narrations and look for traditional audiobooks.

It was hard to move onto another book after this!
I loved this book. I could relate to his inner monologue and found myself laughing many times throughout the book. I read a few negative reviews and I can see how one might take issue with the following aspects: the narrator, focus on death, and as one reviewer called it, "breathless, non-stop chatter." First, I can understand how one might dislike Dion Graham, he is certainly over the top at times. Personally, I like his narration in this book, I thought he suited the material. In reference to the focus on death, it's completely relevant to the story line. Finally, the "non-stop chatter" could get annoying if you're not into that style. Personally, I tend to have the same attention deficit disorder type thought process so it worked for me. I thought it was well written and engaging, I highly recommend this book.

Overly Dramatic Narration (but tricky to navigate)
Is there anything you would change about this book?
It's not my place to change the story.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
Interesting trailblazer in the "creative nonfiction" genre. So sophomoric, though. Would make it less self-indulgent.
What three words best describe Dion Graham’s voice?
Smooth as silk.
Dion Graham has a wonderful voice, but his acting chops are perhaps too dramatic for this book. Dave Eggers' literary voice is manic, yet at the same time ironic and Midwestern. The situations are extreme. The narrator must have had trouble deciding where to put dramatic emphasis. On the whole, the narration seems too emphatic.
Could you see A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
Question completely beside the point.
Any additional comments?
This book might be better enjoyed on the printed page, despite the narrator's talent. A thought-provoking work in some ways, boring in others.

Well done but sometimes painful to listen to.
I read the 50/50 reviews before I bought it but only selected it because it was a moderately fictionalized autobiography. I liked the characters before I started because they reminded me quite a bit of my own family, circumstances, and life. As I got into it I was impressed by the continual stream of consciousness writing style but had to put it down at a few points where the stream became manic ramblings of someone who seemed on the border of a breakdown. From having had to take on my brother's three small children for tragic reasons, the borderline breakdown felt too close to home. The author writes with candor, alacrity and wit and the majority of the book, I was so engaged (again, from personal experience) that I wanted to interrupt and advise him in a few of his quandaries.

Amazing Narrator
The narrator was outstanding. He brought such range, and passion to this work, that he kept me thoroughly engaged. I actually attempted to read this in paperback form several years ago and did not finish it, but with his narration I loved this book.
