About this listen

SOON TO BE A MAJOR TV SERIES

A KNIGHT OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS compiles the first three official prequel novellas to George R.R. Martin’s ongoing masterwork, A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE.

A century before A GAME OF THRONES, two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros…

Before Tyrion Lannister and Podrick Payne there was Dunk and Egg.

A young, naïve but courageous hedge knight, Ser Duncan the Tall towers above his rivals – in stature if not experience. Tagging along with him is his diminutive squire, a boy called Egg – whose true identity must be hidden from all he and Dunk encounter: for in reality he is Aegon Targaryen, and one day he will be king. Improbable heroes though they be, great destinies lie ahead for Dunk and Egg; as do powerful foes, royal intrigue, and outrageous exploits.

Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, and featuring more than 160 illustrations by Gary Gianni, one of the finest fantasy artists of our time, this beautiful volume will transport readers to the world of the Seven Kingdoms in an age of bygone chivalry.

Critic reviews

Praise for A Song of Ice and Fire: "In the grand epic fantasy tradition, Martin is by far the best...tense, surging, insomnia-inflicting." ( Time Magazine)
"An absorbing, exciting read...Martin's style is so vivid that you will be hooked within a few pages." ( The Times)
"The sheer mind-boggling scope of this epic has sent other fantasy writers away shaking their heads.... Its ambition: to construct the Twelve Caesars of fantasy fiction, with characters so venomous they could eat the Borgias." ( Guardian)
"Colossal, staggering.... Martin captures all the intoxicating complexity of the Wars of the Roses or Imperial Rome in his imaginary world.... The writing is always powerful...." ( SFX)

Wish it was longer!

The only problem with this book was that it was not long enough! Great read!!

really enjoyed both the story & way it was told

Really entertaining narration and a really good story. I look forward to the next installment and am now going to search for other books narrated by Harry Lloyd, his variety of accents and the way he switched from one to another was impressive

The reading is a bit childlike for the material.

The reading is too innocent and more fitting to a teen adventure. There are free readings online if this series that I enjoyed slightly more.

The fast paced action

Lovely voice and characterisation, but just too fast!
For fast past bits and all those lists of gallant knights I’m compelled to run at .75x otherwise I lose track.

Fairly good all round

Fantastic book. Not quite on the same level as Roy Dotrice but Harry Lloyd does an okay job at most of the characters.
Egg is great. Blood Raven is great. But the voice of Dunk just sounds off to me. The way he delivers the lines just doesn't sound right some of the time.
That's about the only criticism for this series of novellas wrapped up in this Audiobook.
George R. R. Martin is firing on all cylinders, filling out Westeros on every page. The way he can draw you in to a book world and keep you there while playing you like Rhaegar plays his harp is mesmerizing.
Best author of our time. Perhaps all time.
Simply can not wait for this whole ASOIAF series, Dunk & Egg and Fire & Blood books to be completed so everyone can experience all of the mysteries of Westeros, Essos and hopefully more of Planetos at large.
Keep up the AMAZING work George.
We love and appreciate you, and support you while you continue to pour your heart and soul into this collection of books that brings joy to SO MANY people, the world over.

Loved it

Great story and Harry Lloyd does all its characters justice with his varied accents. A worthy successor to the late Roy Dotrice, who narrated the main books.

Good children's book

If I realised it was a children's book I wouldn't have bought it. A regretted purchase.
