Story
Ulysses S. Grant's life has typically been misunderstood. All too often he is caricatured as a chronic loser and an inept businessman or as the triumphant but brutal Union general of the Civil War. But these stereotypes don't come close to capturing him, as Chernow reveals in his masterful biography, the first to provide a complete understanding of the general and president whose fortunes rose and fell with dizzying speed and frequency.

Before 1862, Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain had rarely left his home state of Maine, where he was a trained minister and mild-mannered professor at Bowdoin College. His colleagues were shocked when he volunteered for the Union army, but he was undeterred and later became known as one of the North’s greatest heroes: On the second day at Gettysburg, after running out of ammunition at Little Round Top, he ordered his men to wield their bayonets in a desperate charge down a rocky slope that routed the Confederate attackers.

Among the autobiographies of great military figures, Ulysses S. Grant’s is certainly one of the finest, and it is arguably the most notable literary achievement of any American president: a lucid, compelling, and brutally honest chronicle of triumph and failure. From his frontier boyhood, to his heroics in battle, to the grinding poverty from which the Civil War ironically rescued him, these memoirs are a mesmerizing, deeply moving account of a brilliant man told with great courage.

Story
Are leaders born or made? Where does ambition come from? How does adversity affect the growth of leadership? Does the man make the times or do the times make the man? In Leadership, Goodwin draws upon four of the presidents she has studied most closely - Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Lyndon B. Johnson (in civil rights) - to show how they first recognized leadership qualities within themselves, and were recognized by others as leaders.

Story
Goodwin describes the broken friendship between Teddy Roosevelt and his chosen successor, William Howard Taft. With the help of the "muckraking" press, Roosevelt had wielded the Bully Pulpit to challenge and triumph over abusive monopolies, political bosses, and corrupting money brokers. Roosevelt led a revolution that he bequeathed to Taft only to see it compromised as Taft surrendered to money men and big business. The rupture led Roosevelt to run against Taft for president, an ultimately futile race that gave power away to the Democrats.

Story
General Stonewall Jackson was like no one anyone had ever seen. In April of 1862 he was merely another Confederate general with only a single battle credential in an army fighting in what seemed to be a losing cause. By middle June he had engineered perhaps the greatest military campaign in American history and was one of the most famous men in the Western World. He had given the Confederate cause what it had recently lacked: hope.

Story
Hated and hailed, excoriated and revered, Abraham Lincoln was at the pinnacle of American power when secessionists gave no quarter in a clash of visions bound up with money, race, identity, and faith. In him we can see the possibilities of the presidency as well as its limitations. This book tells the story of Lincoln from his birth on the Kentucky frontier to his leadership during the Civil War to his tragic assassination: his rise, his self-education, his loves, his bouts of depression, his political failures, his deepening faith, and his persistent conviction that slavery must end.

From one of our most acclaimed new biographers - the first full life of the leader of Lincoln’s "team of rivals" to appear in more than 40 years. William Henry Seward was one of the most important Americans of the 19th century. Progressive governor of New York and outspoken U.S. senator, he was the odds-on favorite to win the 1860 Republican nomination for president. As secretary of state and Lincoln’s closest adviser during the Civil War, Seward not only managed foreign affairs but had a substantial role in military, political, and personnel matters.

Plessy v. Ferguson, the Supreme Court case synonymous with "separate but equal", created remarkably little stir when the justices announced their near-unanimous decision on May 18, 1896. Yet it is one of the most compelling and dramatic stories of the 19th century, whose outcome embraced and protected segregation, and whose reverberations are still felt into the 21st. Separate spans a striking range of characters and landscapes, bound together by the defining issue of their time and ours - race and equality.

Amy Greenberg describes the battles between American and Mexican armies, but also delineates the political battles between Democrats and Whigs - the former led by the ruthless Polk, the latter by the charismatic Henry Clay and a young representative from Illinois named Abraham Lincoln. Greenberg brilliantly recounts this key chapter in the creation of the United States authority and narrative flair.

For the first time ever, the intimate thoughts and political decisions of Abraham Lincoln’s entire presidency - day by day. In a startlingly innovative format, journalist Stephen A. Wynalda has constructed a painstakingly detailed day-by-day breakdown of president Abraham Lincoln’s decisions in office - including his signing of the Homestead Act on May 20, 1862; his signing of the legislation enacting the first federal income tax on August 5, 1861; and more personal incidents like the day his 11-year-old son, Willie, died.

Story
Of the crucial men close to President Lincoln, Secretary of War Edwin Stanton was the most powerful and controversial. Stanton raised, armed, and supervised the army of a million men who won the Civil War. He organized the war effort. He directed military movements from his telegraph office, where Lincoln literally hung out with him. He arrested and imprisoned thousands for "war crimes" such as resisting the draft or calling for an armistice. Stanton was so controversial that some accused him at that time of complicity in Lincoln's assassination.

John Quincy Adams was the last of his kind - a Puritan from the age of the Founders who despised party and compromise yet dedicated himself to politics and government. The son of John Adams, he was a brilliant ambassador and secretary of state, a frustrated president at a historic turning point in American politics, and a dedicated congressman who literally died in office - at the age of 80, in the House of Representatives, in the midst of an impassioned political debate.

With Abraham Lincoln's assassination, his "team of rivals" was left adrift. President Andrew Johnson, a former slave owner from Tennessee, was challenged by Northern Congressmen, Radical Republicans led by Thaddeus Stephens and Charles Sumner, who wanted to punish the defeated South. When Johnson's policies placated the rebels at the expense of the freed black men, radicals in the House impeached him for trying to fire Secretary of War Edwin Stanton.

A deeply private man, shut off even to those who worked closely with him, Abraham Lincoln often captured “his best thoughts", as he called them, in short notes to himself. He would work out his personal stances on the biggest issues of the day, never expecting anyone to see these pieces of writing, which he’d then keep close at hand, in desk drawers and even in his top hat. After four years of unspeakable horror and sacrifice on both sides, the Civil War was about to end. On March 4, 1865, at his second inauguration, President Lincoln did not offer the North the victory speech it yearned for; nor did he blame the South solely for the sin of slavery. Calling the whole nation to account, Lincoln offered a moral framework for peace and reconciliation. Eventually this "with malice toward none" address would be accepted and revered as one of the greatest in the nation's history.

Love this book!
I know there are thousands of books written on Lincoln, some focus on this political life as President, others the war, still others his assassination. I like this because it’s a good general overview; his life, skill set as a politician & military leader, his faith, character, vision and the unbelievable sacrifice he made for this nation. What an amazing human being that came to us at the precise moment in our history in which we needed A. Lincoln. Great book!

Loving Lincoln!
It was interesting and enjoyable to understand more about Lincoln's relationships and interaction with the people around him and this book does a great job exploring those relationships. Once again I feel this would be a better read than listen, right now there is a part I would like to 're-read' but on the Kindle I cannot imagine how long locating it would take.
The book underscores Lincoln's careful attention to details and prefection. His constant soul searching is impressive. I suppose most of all is his ability to change and reconsider. We, as Americans, are lucky he was in the right place at a time that lead him to become one of our heros. I am glad I listened but this is not a book I could recommend.

With Malice Toward None
How many of us can even pretend to live by this sentiment? How many politicians? In this day of virulent political bashing--even from the pulpit, how many clergy, even, can say this? So the story of this man, this ordinary, honest, rail-splitting, Father Abraham, alone rates five stars.
I down rate the narration simply because I feel the narrator attempted, but did not carry-off, the Hoosier twang or the Illionois accent: Lincoln must have had some combination of these (even Kentucky). But other than that, I thought the narrator, Bill Weideman, did a good job. I did not hear him breathe, nor did he swallow excessively...two of my real complaints too often.
Overall, I suppose, biographies have a need for repetition of the same or similar material in various sections due to the nature of the uses that students will put the volume through. If I could, I would deduct half a star here, but that is an Amazon feature.

Thorough and interesting, never boring
Would you listen to A. Lincoln again? Why?
Yes, except for the fact that it is so long. The book explains all of the factors which lead Lincoln towards his career as a lawyer, and through all of his failings, struggles, and depression. As he becomes a politician, Lincoln's speeches are analyzed and his presidency is recounted with great detail. It was hard to listen to the end because I knew how it ended. After he dies (spoiler) the book kind of just ends.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Abraham Lincoln, of course!
Any additional comments?
Everybody should know Lincoln's story, because he rose from a poor family to being a successful lawyer and the most successful president, accomplishing more in four years than others accomplish in eight. It also gave me a good understanding of the political situation at the time.

A Great Listen!
I have read many, and perhaps most of the biographies about A. Lincoln and I would place this one among the best. Ronald White covers the broad spectrum of Lincoln's life in a detailed, but extremely readable manner. The reader may want to expand upon certain aspects, such as the assasination of Lincoln with other books which go into greater detail. Yet, if one wants to achieve an understanding of why all subsequent presidents measure themselves against Lincoln, they cannot go wrong by starting with this biography.
The performance of the narrator is excellent, never placing himself over the material the author has provided.
This audible selection should be one of your top choices if you want to learn more about one of our greatest presidents and enjoy a terrific listening experience.

Great Biography and Analysis of Lincoln
There are a number of good biographies about Abraham Lincoln. This one does an excellent job of weaving Lincoln's story with a personal analysis of his actions and thinking behind them. What a remarkable human being divinely appointed for his time and place!

Insight into Lincoln
This was an interesting study of a great man as seen through the eyes of those who knew him best, as well as through his personal writings and letters. The book was fact based, informative and surprisingly humorous at times, as Lincoln did indeed, have quite a sense of humor. Lincoln was able to find the light side and humor, even among harsh circumstances. Interestingly, as President, he had an open door policy and hardly anyone was ever turned away. He was a common man, self-taught who learned by doing, for he was not formally schooled. He was a self made made man that carried with him-a sense of humor, genuine common sense and a vision for our country.
A wonderful book for someone who desires a greater understanding of Lincoln's life, which begins with him as a child. Although slow moving and dry at times, the insight into Lincoln as a man and as The President was well worth my listening time.
