Story
Immediately following the success of Little Women, Louisa May Alcott sat down to write An-Old Fashioned Girl, expanding on the subject of rich versus poor that she explored in her first novel. It’s a story of a country mouse and a city mouse: 14-year-old Polly Milton travels to Boston for a stay with her friend Fanny Shaw. The wealthy Shaws’ way of life is foreign to Polly who tries to adapt but is quickly labeled “old-fashioned”. Fanny and her friends dress and behave as their elders do, flirting with boys and gossiping.

A disturbing tale of a young man's uncanny ability to remain both young and beautiful while descending into a life of heartless debauchery, The Picture of Dorian Gray was considered proof of both Wilde's genius and his perversion. Oscar Wilde's scandalous best seller of 1891 was one of the most damning pieces of evidence used against him in the trial that brought about his downfall.

Story
Set during the Reign of Terror following the start of the French Revolution... The title character represents the original "hero with a secret identity" that inspired subsequent literary creations such as Don Diego de la Vega (El Zorro) and Bruce Wayne (the Batman). The popularity of the novel encouraged Orczy to write a number of sequels for her "reckless daredevil" over the next 35 years. The original play was performed to great acclaim in France, Italy, Germany, and Spain, while the novel was translated into 16 languages.

Story
Fleeing a disastrous marriage, Helen Huntingdon retreats to the desolate mansion, Wildfell Hall, with her son, Arthur. There, she makes her living as a painter. Finding it difficult to avoid her neighbors, she is soon an object of speculation and gossip. Brontë portrays Helen's eloquent struggle for independence at a time when society defined a married woman as her husband's property.

Story
Honoré de Balzac uses his classic style of detail to describe a most controversial setting in his novel Le Pere Goriot. The story takes place in Paris just after the fall of Napoleon in 1819. The story focuses on three characters, Rastignac, a student who wants to try and make it big in the capital, Vautrin, an interesting and funny character who is also quite mysterious, and the main character, Goriot, that carries a heavy burden that only a loving parent would endure.

Story
Dorothea Brooke is an ardent idealist who represses her vivacity and intelligence for the cold, theological pedant Casaubon. One man understands her true nature: the artist Will Ladislaw. But how can love triumph against her sense of duty and Casaubon’s mean spirit? Meanwhile, in the little world of Middlemarch, the broader world is mirrored: the world of politics, social change, and reforms, as well as betrayal, greed, blackmail, ambition, and disappointment.

Interesting. Not what one expects from Alcott.
I listened (and read along at times) to this, thinking it might express the trajectory of Louisa May Alcott’s writing from her gothic short stories and romances, to Little Women, Little Men, Jo’s Boys, to this late-career novel. And it does. The more elevated style of Jo’s Boys (obviously for an adult audience that had grown up on the previous two books) is in fullest flower here. This late Victorian style feels overwritten to our modern ears — I mean, it quotes extensively in one chapter from Tennyson’s “Idylls of the King,” and one of the primary characters is a poet himself of just such long narrative poems.
But except for the moralizing, melodramatic ending, and far-too ethereally pious nature of the lead female character (from Alcott, no less!), this study in the relationships between patron, artist, and muse often felt to me very much like an Iris Murdoch novel. I could have seen the two male characters and their relationship in one of her tales of strife and matched wills. I wonder if any other Murdoch fans would also discern this, or if it’s just a conviction I had that I can’t shake.

Secrets and Wicked Wealthy People
If you enjoy Alcott's A Long Fatal Love Chase, The Inheritance, or any of her stories written under Banard, you'll enjoy A Modern Mephistopheles. Melodramatic, and suspenseful, its charm lies in it being like something Jo March might have written in her blood and thunder days. Solid narration, though at times too soft spoken that the audio must be turned up.
