Publisher's summary

In A Rose for the Crown, we meet one of history's alleged villains through the eyes of a captivating new heroine - the woman who was the mother of his illegitimate children, a woman who loved him for who he really was, no matter what the cost to herself.

As Kate Haute moves from her peasant roots to the luxurious palaces of England, her path is inextricably intertwined with that of Richard, Duke of Gloucester, later King Richard III. Although they could never marry, their young passion grows into a love that sustains them through war, personal tragedy, and the dangerous heights of political triumph.

Anne Easter Smith’s impeccable research provides the backbone of an engrossing and vibrant debut from a major new historical novelist.

Critic reviews

"[A] sweeping debut." (Publishers Weekly)

"Remarkably assured debut spins a romantic yarn around England's much-maligned King Richard III...a delightful, confident novel that should be a favorite with lovers of the genre. A strong new voice in the field of historical romance." (Kirkus Reviews)

"Smith has produced a vibrant story full of careful historical detail and well-developed characters. More than just retelling historical events, Smith creates an empathetic and fascinating heroine in her own right...highly recommended." (Library Journal)

Great listen not too heavy. Lyrical writing

I love the narration and the way the authors word choices roll of her younger with grace and emotion. Her reading of the text brings richness and depth that elevates this very well written but not quite amazing book to 5 stars! I loved listening to it and well researched detail the author wove into the story made me happy to commute to work every day.

Kinda slow and boring.

Not my favorite Rosalyn Landor narration. The book was rather slow and the love scenes were to innocent for me. Not a bad book, the historical elements were interesting. Just a little tame for my taste.

Loved it

A very good way to learn some history. I appreciated the author's end notes relating to the actual events & how she used real people to frame the story. I found it very interesting.

GREAT WORK OF HISTORICAL FICTION IN 1400 ENGLAND

THE WAR OF THE ROSES IS A BACKDROP. THIS STORY IS THE MOVING STORY OF THE LOVE BETWEEN AN ENGLISH COMMON WOMAN OF LOWER NOBILITY AND THE MAN OF THE HOUR, KING RICHARD III OF HOUSE PLANTAGANET. ITS GREAT DRAMA AND THE READER DOES A GREAT JOB OF IMBUING THE STORY WITH HEROIC ETHOS. A GREAT BOOK AND MELODRAMA.

One of the best audiobooks ever

This book can probably best be described as historical romance. It's a long one and extremely satisfying. It spans many years, includes drama, love, suspense and is very well written and narrated. Can't wait to download the other two in the series.

Loved it!

Such a great story for those of us who are fascinated with this family and medieval history! I'm a fan of Anne Easter Smith and have read all her books. I also love Rosalyn Landor's narration. She truly brings the story to life every time. This was my 2nd time & I'll probably give it another listen in the future. I've done that with other books she narrates. Great books!

Ok read if you are in it for the tragic love story

Tried to enjoy it for the historical value, that is the depiction of the struggles for power among the ruling families of that time. Found it hard to finish though because the focus was on the tragic and sappy romance... making me (as a woman) cringe.
