Editorial reviews

"Imagine if you can -- and of course you can't..." is how Bryson opens his explanation of how a universe is born. And he has the uncanny ability to not say too much, nor too little; to use metaphors brilliantly but without cliché; and to sound like he's actually learning as he goes along. Like Stephen Hawking before him, Bryson skips from one BIG topic to the next with the curiosity of a child and the patience of a schoolteacher. It's like having a front-row seat to the history of the world.

With his slightly bemused English accent, narrator Richard Matthews sounds completely at home in the material, chatting knowingly and with perfect dry comic timing. For managing to cover the universe and keep it lively, this experience definitely merits as an all-time favorite.

Publisher's summary

One of the world’s most beloved and best-selling writers takes his ultimate journey - into the most intriguing and intractable questions that science seeks to answer.

In a Walk in the Woods, Bill Bryson trekked the Appalachian Trail - well, most of it. In In A Sunburned Country, he confronted some of the most lethal wildlife Australia has to offer. Now, in his biggest book, he confronts his greatest challenge: to understand - and, if possible, answer - the oldest, biggest questions we have posed about the universe and ourselves. Taking as territory everything from the Big Bang to the rise of civilization, Bryson seeks to understand how we got from there being nothing at all to there being us.

To that end, he has attached himself to a host of the world’s most advanced (and often obsessed) archaeologists, anthropologists, and mathematicians, travelling to their offices, laboratories, and field camps. He has read (or tried to read) their books, pestered them with questions, apprenticed himself to their powerful minds.

A Short History of Nearly Everything is the record of this quest, and it is a sometimes profound, sometimes funny, and always supremely clear and entertaining adventure in the realms of human knowledge, as only Bill Bryson can render it. Science has never been more involving or entertaining.

This book is not for everyone, one of great books, the effort and the information. Science lead the future.

Great book jarring pronunciation

When are publishers going to start providing the readers pronunciation tips? It was distracting when the reader's plummy, erudite accent, which sounded so convincing, crashed on some fairly obvious words.

A terrific book, well written and, despite anomalous verbalizations, a very good narration.

Literary Genius.

If you could sum up A Short History of Nearly Everything in three words, what would they be?

Absolutely Gobsmacking!

What was one of the most memorable moments of A Short History of Nearly Everything?

That information about the fossils and how the world will likely end in a big encounter with an asteroid

What about Richard Matthews’s performance did you like?

Everything. Perfect reader

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes it moved me in evry way. My mind sang

Any additional comments?

This is a must read for everyone. In Utopia it would be handed out at street corners because everybody would know these things. I highly recommend this book. THe deeply physics stuff was a bit daunting sometimes and I would get lost but not completely lost. The book is well balanced between what you will not understand at all and lots that you will find absolutely riveting and awe inspiring. I had many epiphanies when I was going through it. I did the audio book and I will download the book onto my kindle so that I always have it handy and can go back and forth which you cannot do with an audio book.
That information about fossils and the age of the earth(even though I was not totally convinced!) .
Oh my God! You will learn so much about the history of nearly everything and feel very intelligent and sophisticated just for coming across the information.

so much information packed in to a book and all I could think was to immediately start over...yes! great book! I commute 245 miles one way (490 round trip) every week, often in the middle of night and this book kept me great company for the hours spent on road.

Fantastic! I would absolutely recommend!

While I fully expected factual information, the subtle humor diffused throughout the chapters made for a hilarious bonus. The information provided was very interesting but not so overwhelming that it would put you to sleep while driving.

I have recommended this book to my friends and family even when just half way through.

science for everyone

A very entertaining way to learn amazing things about our world. Totally for the non-scientist. Bryson is a great author. Check out his other work too.
