Publisher's summary

Prepare for the jaw-dropping finale of Sabaa Tahir's beloved New York Times best-selling An Ember in the Ashes fantasy series, and discover: Who will survive the storm?

Picking up just a few months after A Reaper at the Gates left off....

The long-imprisoned jinn are on the attack, wreaking bloody havoc in villages and cities alike. But for the Nightbringer, vengeance on his human foes is just the beginning.

By his side, Commandant Keris Veturia declares herself Empress, and calls for the heads of any and all who defy her rule. At the top of the list? The Blood Shrike and her remaining family.

Laia of Serra, now allied with the Blood Shrike, struggles to recover from the loss of the two people most important to her. Determined to stop the approaching apocalypse, she throws herself into the destruction of the Nightbringer. In the process, she awakens an ancient power that could lead her to victory — or to an unimaginable doom.

And deep in the Waiting Place, the Soul Catcher seeks only to forget the life — and love — he left behind. Yet doing so means ignoring the trail of murder left by the Nightbringer and his jinn. To uphold his oath and protect the human world from the supernatural, the Soul Catcher must look beyond the borders of his own land. He must take on a mission that could save — or destroy — all that he knows.

B- ok story, great narration

The story in book 4 seemed to get bogged down while the main characters saw almost everyone around them killed one after the other followed by their constantly repeating memories of everyone else they had seen killed. Reminded me of book 1 which seemed like a poorly disguised book on S&M.
The author missed out on developing the story line while she focused on death after death to the exclusion of plot, foreshadow and character development.
I'd probably listen to the store again once I've had time to forget and there are no other better written series to devour.

This is how it’s done.

Mesmerizing, heartbreaking, hopeful, terrible, beautiful. What isn’t this series? Such a spectacular and fitting finale to one of the best, most devastating series I’ve ever read.

all time top 3 series

talk about beginners luck!?! Sabaa Tahir is 4 for 4 in my estimation. its hard to believe these are her first books!!

I always gauge my love for a series on how sad I am when I get to the end. never before have I felt so emotionally invested after just 4 books!

I will admit that because of the length of time between the books, I knew i would be a bit lost trying to keep events and characters straight, so in anticipation of ASBtS I went back and listened to the first 3 again. I've never had the patience and attention span to be able to do that before, but this series grabbed and pulled me in from the first chapter of book 1, as quickly as it did the first time.

READ THIS SERIES! You will not be disappointed.

Excellent Series

This was an excellent series, I do think she could have done it in 3 books instead of 4 but nonetheless it kept your attention and you were eager to go on to the next book. I loved how each book picked up where it left off from the previous book.

I cried

Yup, I cried at the end...mostly because...well, it was time to let these characters, who went through so much, go. They survived their tale, with deep losses...and I survived their tale. And...allergies 😭😅 Though, the end was a bit anti-climactic even if on a happy note. Maybe there will be more, one day...?

Highly recommend the entire series.

Intracacy of the story line

It kept me involved in the lives of the characters throughout and because it followed four characters there was always excitement.
