Publisher's summary
Eunsun Kim was born in North Korea, one of the most secretive and oppressive countries in the modern world. As a child, Eunsun loved her country...despite her school field trips to public executions, daily self-criticism sessions, and the increasing gnaw of hunger as the countrywide famine escalated. By the time she was 11 years old, Eunsun's father and grandparents had died of starvation, and Eunsun too was in danger of starving. Finally her mother decided to escape North Korea with Eunsun and her sister, not knowing that they were embarking on a journey that would take them nine long years to complete. Told with grace and courage, her memoir is a riveting exposé of North Korea's totalitarian regime and, ultimately, a testament to the strength and resilience of the human spirit.

Story
Born in 1970s North Korea, Lucia Jang grew up in a typical household - her parents worked in the factories, and the family scraped by on rations. Nightly she bowed to her photo of Kim Il-Sung. It was the beginning of a chaotic period with a decade-long famine. Jang married an abusive man who sold their baby. She left him and went home to help her family by illegally crossing the river to China to trade goods. She was caught and imprisoned twice.

As North Korea's State Poet Laureate, Jang Jin-sung led a charmed life. With food provisions (even as the country suffered through its great famine), a travel pass, access to strictly censored information, and audiences with Kim Jong-il himself, his life in Pyongyang seemed safe and secure. Story
Half-Korean, half-Japanese, Masaji Ishikawa has spent his whole life feeling like a man without a country. This feeling only deepened when his family moved from Japan to North Korea when Ishikawa was just thirteen years old, and unwittingly became members of the lowest social caste. His father, himself a Korean national, was lured to the new Communist country by promises of abundant work, education for his children, and a higher station in society. But the reality of their new life was far from utopian.

Story
It’s the unfathomable modern legend that has become a testament to the resilience of the human spirit: the 1972 Andes plane crash and the Uruguayan rugby teammates who suffered 72 days among the dead and dying. It was a harrowing test of endurance that ended in a miraculous rescue. Now comes the unflinching and emotional true story by one of the men who found his way home. Four decades after the tragedy, a climber discovered survivor Eduardo Strauch’s wallet and returned it to him. It was a gesture that compelled Strauch to finally “break the silence of the mountains.”

Aleksandr I. Solzhenitsyn’s startling book led, almost 30 years later, to Glasnost, Perestroika, and the "Fall of the Wall". One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich brilliantly portrays a single day, any day, in the life of a single Russian soldier who was captured by the Germans in 1945 and who managed to escape a few days later. Along with millions of others, this soldier was charged with some sort of political crime, and since it was easier to confess than deny it and die, Ivan Denisovich "confessed" to "high treason" and received a sentence of 10 years in a Siberian labor camp.

As a child growing up in North Korea, Hyeonseo Lee was one of millions trapped by a secretive and brutal communist regime. Her home on the border with China gave her some exposure to the world beyond the confines of the Hermit Kingdom and, as the famine of the 1990s struck, she began to wonder, question and realise that she had been brainwashed her entire life. Given the repression, poverty and starvation she witnessed surely her country could not be, as she had been told, 'the best on the planet'?

The daughter of a Jewish seed exporter, the author was born Mira Ryczke in 1923 in a suburb of the Baltic seaport of Danzig (now Gdansk, Poland). Her childhood was happy, and she learned to cherish her faith and heritage. Through the 1930s, Mira's family remained in the Danzig area despite a changing political climate that was compelling many friends and neighbors to leave. With the Polish capitulation to Germany in the autumn of 1939, however, Mira and her family were forced from their home.

Scions of a once-great southern Chinese family that produced the tutor of the last emperor, Jun and Hong were each other’s best friends until, in their twenties, they were separated at the end of the Chinese Civil War. One became a model Communist, the other a model capitalist. On Taiwan, Jun married a Nationalist general, established a trading company, and emigrated to the United States. On the Communist mainland, Hong built her medical career under a cloud of suspicion about her family and survived two waves of “re-education” before she was acclaimed for her achievements.

Story
A Promise at Sobibór is the story of Fiszel Bialowitz, a teenaged Polish Jew who escaped the Nazi gas chambers. Between April 1942 and October 1943, about 250,000 Jews from European countries and the Soviet Union were sent to the Nazi death camp at Sobibór in occupied Poland. Sobibór was not a transit camp or work camp: Its sole purpose was efficient mass murder. On October 14, 1943, approximately half of the 650 or so prisoners still alive at Sobibór undertook a daring and precisely planned revolt, killing SS officers and fleeing through minefields and machine-gun fire.

Day and night they marched - soldiers, trucks, tanks, and more soldiers, in a never-ending line - an invincible force. One night, his father had a dream. In this dream, he saw what he had to do: where to build the bunker, how to build it, and even its dimensions. This would be their Noah's Ark, saving them from the initial deluge.

Between 150,000 and 200,000 people are being held in its political prison camps, which have existed twice as long as Stalin's Soviet gulags and twelve times as long as the Nazi concentration camps. Very few born and raised in these camps have escaped. But Shin Donghyuk did. Story
In the aftermath of Germany's defeat in World War I and the failed November Revolution of 1918-19, the conservative government of Bavaria identified Jews with left-wing radicalism. Munich became a hotbed of right-wing extremism, with synagogues under attack and Jews physically assaulted in the streets. It was here that Adolf Hitler established the Nazi movement and developed his anti-Semitic ideas. Michael Brenner provides a gripping account of how Bavaria's capital city became the testing ground for Nazism and the Final Solution.

Fantastic book
Where does A Thousand Miles to Freedom rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This story is so unreal. I can't believe there are humans on Earth still going through things like this. Please give it a read and it will open your eyes to a struggle most of us could not even comprehend. I will probably listen to this audiobook more than once.
What other book might you compare A Thousand Miles to Freedom to and why?
?
What does Emily Woo Zeller bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
The way the book is read makes you almost picture Eunsun Kim reading the book. Very well done.
If you could give A Thousand Miles to Freedom a new subtitle, what would it be?

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I've read a few books on North Koreans defecting. While Eunsun demonstrates amazing emotional strength and I cannot imagine the trials and tribulations, the book didn't WOW me, but maybe because I've read so many other books about North Korean defectors.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
Relief for Eunsun.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
Just ok.
Do you think A Thousand Miles to Freedom needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
No. I think the story is based on her defection which was complete.

Malice cel unmask
The narrative shows the full evil of the ruling class of north Koera. Adds new meaning of the cruelty of this group. Yet contains the feeling of hope and spirit

the narrator's voice is Pleasant and sounds slightly Asian blending in the autobiography A sense of authenticity. Very engaging and enjoyable story but sometimes surprisingly Advanced English words. Really liked it.

She SURVIVED North Korea
For me, appreciating this piece is less about appreciating the actual text and more about appreciating where it came from. This is the first-hand account of a woman who fled the only home she had ever known, North Korea, with her mother and sister as a small girl. That's fascinating enough to earn my recommendation.

just alright
I don't want to discount any person's struggle to escape that horrible place, but this story was somewhat short and therefore lacked details. I would have liked a more in depth story. I'm a bit fascinated by stories of escape like this and have listened to a few from other former North Koreans. Some were better than this, some far worse.

A very inspirational and eye opening memoir.
There is nothing more powerful than a true story of survival and hope like this that can make one relieze just how fortunate they are and how truely understanding the plight of others in similar situations like this one is so important.

Courage in the midst of hardship
I loved this book and reading the frightening flight of this young woman and her mother and sister from North Korea.
I was amazed by their courage and determination. I yearn for freedom for all North Koreans.
Beautifully written and performed!
