Resumen del Editor

Ten years ago, Janet Woititz broke new ground in our understanding of what it is to be an adult child of an alcoholic. Today, she re-examines the movement and its inclusion of adult children from various dysfunctional family backgrounds who share the same characteristics. After more than 10 years of working with ACoAs, she shares the recovery hints that she has found to work. Listen to Adult Children of Alcoholics to see where the journey began and for ideas on where to go from here.

This book provides wisdom and information for all adult children of dysfunctional families.

Sound information in any Era and explained well.

Great read, good examples, well written. The author shares information from years of therapy with ACOAs that is relevant with readers of any age or racial background.

Very helpful!

I found this book very helpful! It’s a part of my therapy and it helped me understand a whole lot about myself. Take it little bit at a time. Remember not to blame your parents but the disease.

Eye opener

I am an adult child and my mother is an alcoholic. She has depended on me since I was little. She was a single mom. So I have always been her care taker. I had to raise her. Well I have always pushed my childhood memories to the back of my head “cause she was a good mom”. Well Mother’s Day this year I found a psychology report from when I was in kindergarten. Holly crap it brought everything right to the front on my memory. My mom is 72 retired and she lives with my husband and I. We have asked her to start looking for her own place. I can no longer be her crutch. I have to start healing myself. I have not gotten to have an adult life yet and I’m 44. There is hope and we are not alone. One day at a time.

Have been putting off reading for over 10 years...

Over 10 years ago one of my younger sisters gave me this book to read. Her therapist at the time had suggested she read it. At the time my sister was about 29 and I was 34. There are 4 of us sisters and the sister who gave me this book is the next sibling in line after me. The two of us shared a LOT of life experiences in relation to our dad's alcoholism and abuse. Our childhood was beyond hard, as I am sure a lot of your's were who are hear to listen to this book.

When my precious sister gave me the physical copy of this book, the inscription said something to the effect that when I started reading it, it would be like the author had been right there in our home growing up, and was writing about us specifically. My sister was right! This book is spot on.

I feel I wasted 10 years not reading it. Just letting it sit on my book shelf. But I was scared. Honestly scared. My sister's and my life could have been SO different if we had gotten therapy and help sooner. Now I will be 46 next month. I have missed out on SO many things "normal" everyday people who are not ACOA's take for granted.

I DESPERATELY want and deserve a better life than the one I've been living. We as ACOA's - we ALL deserve this, and we deserve the PEACE we haven't been able to achieve in life.

The connection I felt, the connection I FEEL to this book, and to Dr. Janet Woititz is incredibly strong. I HIGHLY recommend to not be me, to not wait to read or listen to this book one day longer! We all deserve the peace, the love we have been missing in our lives. We deserve to be able to move on, to allow our inner children the chance to grow up and truly live our best adult lives we can.

To all of those who had their childhoods stolen and their adult lives and personalities not be able to be fully expressed...I send all my heartfelt love to each and everyone of you. We CAN change our lives, and we can have the lives we want and DESERVE!!

The husband of an adult child of an alcoholic

This is a great book for any spouse to read that has a partner that was a child of an alcoholic. I now feel that I can understand my wife a lot better now...

Very interesting

Although I knew it existed, I somehow missed reading this book throughout the years - It really clarifies the behaviors of children of alcoholics and describes how they came to behave the way they do. It is descriptive and I found myself frequently shaking my head in agreement. Unfortunately, it doesn't offer any solutions to help quell the behaviors, but I can see why it has been such a popular book.

Clarity and a must for ACOAs

Having been a child of addicts, I never questioned why I behaved the way I did and where my preconceived thoughts originated from. It was a relief to be able to separate the child’s voice from the voices of my parents; a child who now has the ability to make healthier choices and pave a brighter and kinder future for himself.

Everyone should read this book...WOW!

This book is mainly for adult children who had a mom/dad with some sort of mental or emotional disorder and/or were alcoholics. But I challenge you to read this even if this doesn't apply to you, it will hit home in some way. No one had perfect parents and/or siblings. This book is AMAZING! Listen or read it, it's worth every penny!
