Earphones Award Winner (AudioFile Magazine)

Ernest Hemingway said, “All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn". One hundred years after its author’s death, this classic remains remarkably modern and poignantly relevant. In this new edition, Elijah Wood reads Huck in a youthful voice that may be the closest interpretation to Twain’s original intent. His performance captures the excitement and confusion of adolescence and adventure. Best of all, the immediacy of Wood’s energetic reading sweeps listeners up and makes them feel as though they’re along for the ride, as Huck and Jim push their raft toward freedom.

Critic reviews

"Elijah Wood’s performance is my nominee for the Narrators’ Hall of Fame. Wood’s unself-conscious reading doesn’t sound like a reading at all. He creates an entire world filled with people who cross class and color lines. His accents range from British to faux-British to all manner of regional affectations, twangs, and drawls. Wood’s delivery makes Mark Twain’s delicious wit and twisty language sound completely natural, especially as Huck invents plausible words to suit the moment. The journey down the Mississippi with Huck and Jim is pure pleasure, as the boy who won’t be "sivilized" and the runaway slave encounter scoundrels, slip out of scrapes, and invent outrageous tales. The listening couldn’t be better if Huck read the story himself." (AudioFile Magazine)

Fifty years late

I finally got around to this book. I think I would have enjoyed it just as much without the "N" word repeated 239 times. No, I didn't count them - I goggled it. The only thing I would change would be my rating for Elijah Wood (narrator) a few more stars. Great job!

Any additional comments?

Mark Twain is one of my favorite writers. I've wanted to read this book for a long time. Listening to it in my car was fantastic.

Amazing story and masterful narration

Elijah Wood does a fantastic job narrating as Huck Finn. One of the best performances I've heard. His cadence, voice characterizations, and inflection are spot on throughout. Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer are surprising heroes: motivated by conscience to do what's right despite their outward appearance and self-assessment as mischievous troublemakers. Twain's story telling is delightful.

Amazing Performance! Elijah Wood was fantastic!

I listened to Tom Sawyer read by Nick Offerman before this and liked it. I wasn't sure what to expect going into this but it blew me away! One of my best Audible purchases!

Simply outstanding!

Elijah Wood truly gets it! I've read the book before, I wasn't sure if I wanted to listen to it, and the only reason for me to check it out was the famous actor and his voice.

Maybe I wasn't expecting too much, or maybe I just forgot how great Mark Twain is as a writer, but at first I was only enjoying the fact that Elijah Wood is actually doing something other than Hobbits :) However, a couple of chapters in I was already hooked to his elaborate play with accents, which naturally became characters, and began to build up the story.

I listened to some parts of the book a few times, just to experience a scene one more time, it is that much captivating! Highly recommend, especially because this is not 'trimmed' language version, all the cultural jokes, references, and sayings are intact and are hilarious!

Elijah Wood does a great job narrating.

The part I really enjoyed about this book (besides the story itself) was the language that they used back then. It was english, so I could understand it. But it was also unusual, and that's what helped make it interesting.
Good story.
Great narrating.

BEAUTIFUL

Elijah Wood did an incredible job with this classic! Sometimes I forgot there was one reader because he changed voices/accents so well.
