Earphones Award Winner (AudioFile Magazine)

Ernest Hemingway said, “All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn". One hundred years after its author’s death, this classic remains remarkably modern and poignantly relevant. In this new edition, Elijah Wood reads Huck in a youthful voice that may be the closest interpretation to Twain’s original intent. His performance captures the excitement and confusion of adolescence and adventure. Best of all, the immediacy of Wood’s energetic reading sweeps listeners up and makes them feel as though they’re along for the ride, as Huck and Jim push their raft toward freedom.

Critic reviews

"Elijah Wood’s performance is my nominee for the Narrators’ Hall of Fame. Wood’s unself-conscious reading doesn’t sound like a reading at all. He creates an entire world filled with people who cross class and color lines. His accents range from British to faux-British to all manner of regional affectations, twangs, and drawls. Wood’s delivery makes Mark Twain’s delicious wit and twisty language sound completely natural, especially as Huck invents plausible words to suit the moment. The journey down the Mississippi with Huck and Jim is pure pleasure, as the boy who won’t be "sivilized" and the runaway slave encounter scoundrels, slip out of scrapes, and invent outrageous tales. The listening couldn’t be better if Huck read the story himself." (AudioFile Magazine)

Great Book

I am not comfortable with the N-word (which it uses a lot) nor any other racial slang really, yet this book was great. It really gives you a look into another era. There are repetitive parts in it ("by and by"), but it was still interesting. It has a lot of funny parts in it. Elijah Wood's narration of it is excellent. For me it also reminded me of being a kid and having my dad read it to me along with other Twain novels. I was old enough to read, but enjoyed it when my parents would read me a book, it turned me into an avid reader as an adult.

Huckleberry Finn

Was dubious about reader but young Mr. Wood did a bang up job bringing this classic to life. Mr. Clemons would be pleased I think. This is a great story cleverly and skillfully performed by the young actor who fleshed out the words of the wonderful story and brought it to life.

Amazing Performance!

Elijah Wood's stunning performance was a pleasure to listen to. And for this 90s girl who had a major crush on little Elijah when he played Huck in the Disney film adaptation, it was a bit of nostalgic wish-gratification to hear him in that role again. Though his voice talents as other characters is really what made the performance shine!

Interesting from a historical perspective

If you can get past the painful use of racial slurs that were considered acceptable during Twain's lifetime, this story is well-performed by Elijah Wood, and interesting for its portrayal of life along the Mississippi at a certain point in American history.

Classic Twain

Well, I can't say anything about Mark Twain which hasn't already been said better by folks more informed than I.

But I enjoyed this romp through the old river days.

Twain was irreverent and politically incorrect even in his time and much more so now, with repeated use of the "N" word.

He holds a mirror up to the times of his day which so often reveals an unflattering image of beliefs and practices of the day. Maybe we should examine our own time with the same mirror.
Lots of irony and wit used in this book as well, but don't worry, it's not preachy or self righteous, but quite a journey with lots of fun and action along the way.
