Publisher's summary

The adrenaline-fueled, Star Wars-style sequel to Behind the Throne, a new space adventure series from author K.B. Wagers.

Former gunrunner-turned-Empress Hail Bristol was dragged back to her home planet to fill her rightful position in the palace. With her sisters and parents murdered, the Indranan empire is on the brink of war. Hail must quickly make alliances with nearby worlds if she has any hope of surviving her rule.

When peace talks turn violent and Hail realizes she's been betrayed, she must rely on her old gunrunning ways to get out of trouble. With help from an old boss and some surprising new allies, she must risk everything to save her world.

Great Sequel

There's more action in this sequel than in the first book. Especially in the last half when they leave the planet and we meet Hail's friends from her gun running days. But it still has all the heart and political intrigue of Behind the Throne. Empress Hail and her bodyguards are getting closer. The dialog back and forth between them adds little touches of humor.

The narration by Angele Masters just keeps getting better too. She handles all the action as well as the dialog smoothly and brings the story to life.

Wayyy more action than the first

While the first book was mostly political drama on one planet, the second book is mostly world hoping and space wars. It’s awesome, but ends on a cliff hanger. I’m starting the next immediately! (PS: can she please come up with a better catchphrase than “bugger me”??)

Super Series

Book 2 is even more explosive than Book 1. I love the story and the characters. The blend of Hail as an empress and a gun runner works perfectly. I cannot wait to dive into Book 3.

Drull, predictable, rip-off.

This book hits a series of tropes and while the narrator was amazing, even they couldn’t save this title from itself. You can skip this one.

Heavy is the head that wears the crown

This book is about as enjoyable as the first in the series, with plenty of deception, intrigue, and unscrupulous characters vying for power. Although this story has many unique elements, there are also still some tropes and clichés that have been done all too many times, especially regarding Hail's relationships with those around her.

Continuing from where the last book left off, Hail now has to deal with many threats facing the empire. There are many family members and friends of those who were involved the previous coup, who still hold powerful positions within the empire. Moreover, there are reforms needed and past promises people expect Hail to keep. Attacks against Hail's life continue. Eventually, Hail is tricked into leaving the planet, only to find herself without the resources of the empire and needing to rely on her past contacts and experiences as a former gun-runner.
