Welcome to my Audio Adventure where I get to be an actor, a playwright, a songwriter, and a storyteller. In this opening episode, I play all five parts in a scene from my hit comedy Escabana In Da Moonlight, perform my song “God’s Little Joke,” and take you behind the scenes into my final performance as Atticus Finch in the Broadway production of To Kill A Mockingbird.

In town for the Toronto Film Festival, a wayward pedestrian screamed at me, which inspired my song “Have a Good Life then Die.” In a speech that will outlive me, I take you on the set of The Newsroom on the day Will McAvoy answered the question “What makes America the greatest country in the world?” “Now You Know You Can” is the song about what that day meant to me.

Outstanding!

A heartfelt memoir that I didn't want to end. The writing is outstanding and I'm sure Aaron Sorkin enjoyed it as much as I did! Was sad it was done. Loved the music and the lyrics were perfect. Thanks for sharing.

What an eye opener!

I've known for some time that Jeff Daniels was a talented actor but I had no idea he was also a talented playwright, poet, songwriter and musician! Thank you Ben Daniels for bringing it all together for us!

I admit it, when a Jeff Daniels role allows him to display his serious side, he's one of my all time favorite actors to watch. His monologue in the first episode of Newsroom is arguably one of the best ever, his role in Looming Tower incredible, and seeing him on Broadway as Atticus Finch in To Kill A Mockingbird was, well I was speechless. So when this podcast came out I was ALL IN...until I saw it included him playing and singing music he wrote and talking about Dumb and Dumber (which I never saw). My heart sank and to be honest I didn't expect much. But hey, it's JD, and I didn't have anything else to listen to.

Turns out he's not only an amazing actor, he writes funny, story-confession songs plucked right from his own experiences. I literally had people staring at me as I laughed out loud in the checkout counter of my local grocery store. An insightful and honest compilation of real life tales, told by multiple people (spoiler alert - Daniels plays them all), the 12, half hour episodes delight, but go by way too fast. Harry Dunne's slapstick-esk interviews of Daniels were classic; the hilarious sophomoric lines delivered fast-paced by half-witted Harry, a deadpanned Daniels volleying his replies. My interest piqued so much I added Dumb and Dumber to my Netflix watch list!

I loved the humble gratitude for so many other actors. The surprisingly good voice and harmonies in his music. The behind the scenes (sometimes self-deprecating) details of so many of the roles I loved and cherished. The explanation of how he chooses and prepares for his roles, making them all the more impressive to watch and recall. The totality of his talent - no one trick pony here.

Just like in so many of Daniels' other notable roles, I was left wanting more from this consummate performer. Please tell me there will be a sequel - perhaps Alive and Well Enough To.
