About this listen

Shy, studious Irene Stenson and wild, privileged Pamela Webb had been the best of friends for one short high school summer. Their friendship ended the night Pamela dropped Irene off at home - and Irene walked in to discover her parents' bodies on the kitchen floor. It was ruled a murder-suicide, and Irene fled Dunsley, determined to wipe out every memory attached to her Northern California hometown. But now she has been summoned back.

Pamela's email had been short and cryptic. More alarming, it included the code word they had used as teenagers, suggesting an urgency and secrecy that puzzled Irene. What could be important enough to make her former friend get in touch after all these years? She won't find out - at least not from Pamela, who lies dead in the luxurious home of her father, a US senator, pill and liquor bottles beside her. The shock has barely subsided before the rumors begin to swirl.

Irene had planned to get out of this place as quickly as possible. But her reporter's instinct - and her own hunger to know the truth - compel her to extend her stay at the local lodge. Even more compelling is the man who runs the place - a hazel-eyed ex-marine who's as used to giving orders as Irene is to ignoring them.

Luke Danner can see the terrified young girl hidden beneath Irene Stenson's black-clad, confident exterior - and he is intent on protecting her. But he is also driven by passions of his own, and together they will risk far more than local gossip to sort out what happened to Pamela Webb and what really happened on that long-ago summer night.

That was a little weird, right?

I suppose this book was OK for what it was. However, the part where the two attractive protagonists have sex and then you learn about the pedophilia and then immediately afterwards have sex again was a little weird. One would think that after having seen video of an old guy and a child, one would maybe need to take a day or two before that mood struck them again.

Not one of her best.

The story is plodding and slow. It drags. Issues with Daddy talking to the hero's dr. No dr would discuss a patient, let alone one she's never seen. The plot is eh.

It just seems that Krentz is reaching and not quite tall enough.

Not a fan of the narrator. Her reading comes across as this she sees it all as a joke.

Excellent audio book!

Best combination book and audio performance I have heard so far. Jayne is always an excellent storyteller and writer, this book is one of my favorites of hers. Excellent performance by the narrator too. I hope they do more books together.

Deeper than usual

...for JAK. I love her non-Arcane books. This one is a little more serious in theme but the humor and quirk are all there. I love Arcane too!

Another great listen!

Ms. Krentz and Ms. Cobb do it again! I was intrigued by this mystery, and it actually gave me chills more than once. There's nothing like political intrigue and murder to get the blood going. It also made me imagine going back to my own home town all these years later.

I especially liked the way the narrator handled the sex scenes. They were steamy without being raunchy, and that's a fine line, but I guess that's the writing too....

The discovery of the video made by Pamela was especially creepy.
I recommend this one!!!

One of JAK best

Suspense filled mystery with above average plot. Characters were well formed and believable. Lots of small town and political intrigue with satisfying romance as backstory.

All Night Long

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and its narration! It takes a special talent for a narrator to be able to differentiate characters in an audio book - especially when there are several male and female characters! Kudos to Amanda Cobb for having made each character in this novel distinct and believable! She did more than just alter voices! Her inflections and subtle nuances of normal every day language made me chuckle more than once. Fun!

another good older JAK novel

I had read this book once in paperback and enjoyed it. Now I am limited to only 1 hour of reading per day, I have moved, per my ophthalmologist orders, to mostly audio books. The transition from using eyesight to using my ears was difficult at first, but I am becoming a better listener in the past 2 years.

I had forgotten how much I enjoyed this novel. I really like both Luke and Irene, the hero and heroine, who are both "walking wounded", who meet up, are attracted to each other and help each other to heal emotionally from traumatic experiences. Lots of suspects in the case, some enjoyable sex scenes, and funny minor characters. I especially like Luke.

IMHO, a good narration.
