Publisher's summary

For four years in the White House and one year of campaigning before that, he was rarely more than a few steps behind Bill Clinton. As the president's senior adviser, George Stephanopoulos saw it all: the endless arguments, the back-hall scheming, the protracted decisions, and the last minute flip-flops that somehow produced real accomplishments but also set in motion an almost tragic series of events that placed the fate of the president in the hands of the Senate. Now, with the natural ease of a born storyteller and the sensitive eye for detail of a novelist, Stephanopoulos tells an extraordinarily gripping story of human foible and frailty in high places that is destined to be one of the great political memoirs of our age. Stephanopoulos also tells, in his own voice, his story, of how his drives, vanities, and insecurities, along with everyone else's peppered the playing field of the biggest game in town.

Critic reviews

"Stephanopoulos is a unique witness, and his gossipy, detailed recollections give a disturbing picture not only of Bill Clinton but of the modern White House - a place of mood swings, improvisation, office intrigue, and chaos." (Jeffrey Frank, The New Yorker)

Not too shabby

Seems like the author was telling a story that would balance what some Americans thought of President Clinton. It seemed to be a fair assessment, and was stated from the beginning as HIS perspective, which is fine. There were realy no surprising revelations, except the author was able to get some of his emotions about Mr. Clinton off his chest.

30 yes old and in the White House

Close enough to the pinnacle to see the beauty and the flaws. An insider's perspective and then one from a distance. Well writ. Well read. Enjoyed.

ABRIDGED!!!

Good story but I didn’t know Audible had abridged versions. My mistake for not reading more in the description.

Wow!! Amazing book!!

This was such an interesting look into working with Bill Clinton. And I loved how candid the author was about his anxiety. Awesome book!!

ABRIDGED

It is my own fault. I didn't check if this was an unabridged copy. It is not!

Beware this audio book is ABRI

West wing TV show brought me here!

This account of the White House provided more gravity to the actual show. George's experience is very interesting.

Title really apropo

Really liked the story & George reading it made it even more enjoyable. Politics is really rough business. Why anyone chooses to enter into it I'll never understand.

Excellent but artifucially shortened!

Who decided that this excellent book should be limited to 3 hours? The subject is worthy and the author's perspective is unique and obviously close to the action. Listening to George Stephanopoulos is a treat. This should have been his entire book, without abridgement.

The best primer for business and life.

I carried a copy of this book under my passenger seat for years, so that if I had to wait somewhere, I could reach from the driver's seat over to the passengers seat and grab my copy of All Too Human.

I have worked my way up through management, (owned my own mowing company from ages 7 to 17, made my way up through management to Chief Operations Officer, etc) and this is the best primer for how to talk to power both above, below, and equal to you.

This is the best book for how to work with both genders, and people of power in the other gender. I cannot stress how great of a training book this is. And that is before you take in to account it is one of the greatest political and historical books ever regarding completely changing how presidents get elected.

There are two major changes in the modern presidency: 1. The addition of television. 2. The techniques Stephanopoulos, Carville, and Begala used to get Clinton elected.

This book should be required reading in every high school in America (I lean Republican by the way, and it is in no way a Democratic love note).

This is my favorite book of all time, from long before there was an Audible. While it says it is unabridged, I have a signed first edition, and I feel the hard copy is longer. But for an audio book, this is a great start.

An Excellent Perspective

Taken from Stephanopoulos' perspective this is an excellent listen. I originally purchased this on cassette when it first came out and listened to it several times. While some of the issues that where important to us at that time seem trivial in the post 9/11 world, the insight brought to these events from his position in the Clinton group is extremely interesting. The fact that George is reading it makes it even better. There are a lot of positions expressed about the many personalities involved as well as the good things accomplished, the mistakes, and the opportunities squandered.
