About this listen
What is history, really? At first glance, you might think this is a silly question. History is the study of the past: who did what, when, and where it happened. That’s all true! But history is also so much more.
History is a story, like a pick-your-own-adventure story. It’s a lens you look through to understand where you are now, how you got here, and where you might be going in the future. As Pearl S. Buck once said, “If you want to understand today, you have to search yesterday.”
History is happening now. And you are making history every day. A thousand years from now, historians will be listening to audiobooks, reading Tweets, and watching YouTube and TikTok to learn about what life must have been like in the early 2000s!
The scope of this book focuses on Mesopotamia and the Mediterranean regions due to the volume of information covered. However, we explore other ancient civilizations around the world in other books.
This book is not just for homeschoolers. We hope it will be used by any parent wanting to give their child knowledge of and an appreciation for ancient history and provide perspective on why studying history is essential. Use it in your curriculum or as a supplement. Hand it to your kid for rainy-day listening. Share it as a family activity. History has gotten a bad rap for being dry and dull. We think it deserves to be read as the fascinating, important, sometimes even hilarious subject it is!
You will learn about what makes a group of people a civilization, how they rise, and what causes them to collapse. Then, as we look at individual societies, we’ll explore things like:
- How they came to exist.
- What makes them unique.
- How they fit into their world.
- What contributions they left for future civilizations.
- What happened to them in the end.

Story
The kingdom of Cornucopia was once the happiest in the world. It had plenty of gold, a king with the finest moustache you could possibly imagine, and butchers, bakers, and cheesemongers whose exquisite foods made a person dance with delight when they ate them. Everything was perfect - except for the misty Marshlands to the north, which, according to legend, were home to the monstrous Ickabog. Anyone sensible knew that the Ickabog was just a myth to scare children into behaving. But the funny thing about myths is that sometimes they take on a life of their own.

Engaging, Informative & Fun!
After buying the physical book, I am happy to see that an audiobook version of this title is available too. The narration is excellent – it really brings this book to life, and life to the lessons! The narrator has an active and stimulating voice, including her voices used for Pavi and Piper – no droning on here. ;) I noticed that every time I would walk into my daughter's room while she was listening, I found myself lingering to hear more myself. My daughter has enjoyed listening to the lessons, and I have not had to remind her over and over to finish up her history assignments. The author wraps up each topic by relating it to modern-day scenarios and what it would have been like to live during those times. I am impressed with how engaging this audiobook is for such a wide age range… It is almost like a Pixar movie, which is obviously made for kids but is written so that the entire family can enjoy it. My daughter appreciated having the book to follow along with, as well as the accompanying workbook and journal, which I think helps to cement the topics learned. It is nice to see her enjoying her history lessons; I remember history being sooooo boring when I was her age. I am happy to have stumbled across this curriculum and will be watching for future releases on other topics.
