About this listen

Maya Angelou’s unforgettable collection of poetry lends its name to the documentary film about her life, And Still I Rise, as seen on PBS’s American Masters.

Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.

I’m not cute or built to suit a fashion model’s size

But when I start to tell them,

They think I’m telling lies.

I say, It’s in the reach of my arms,

The span of my hips,

The stride of my step,

The curl of my lips.

I’m a woman

Phenomenally.

Phenomenal woman,

That’s me.

Thus begins “Phenomenal Woman”, just one of the beloved poems collected here in Maya Angelou’s third book of verse. These poems are powerful, distinctive, and fresh - and, as always, full of the lifting rhythms of love and remembering. And Still I Rise is written from the heart, a celebration of life as only Maya Angelou has discovered it.

“It is true poetry she is writing,” M. F.K . Fisher has observed, “not just rhythm, the beat, rhymes. I find it very moving and at times beautiful. It has an innate purity about it, unquenchable dignity.... It is astounding, flabbergasting, to recognize it, in all the words I read every day and night...it gives me heart, to hear so clearly the caged bird singing and to understand her notes.”

It’s a common turn of phrase that poetry is meant to be heard. Tone, pauses, cadence, and vocal inflections all serve to further the emotional pull of modern and historical poetic masterpieces. In audio, poems can be heard and enjoyed just as the poet meant them to be. Taking into account not only the words themselves but the way they are spoken, our list provides a look at the power behind a poem, celebrating those works which have touched our souls.

Deeply moving, awesomely inspiring!

I have owned thing book in print for decades. Yet upon hearing it read by the, now deceased, author the poems touched me so much more. At the age of 60 Maya Angelou yet brings this black man to smile, tears, and joy all simultaneously. Even in death she lives.

An all time favorite!

Far and away the book I listen to the most. It's not just the beauty of her poetry. It's the cadence and rhythm and depth of her voice. It's so soothing and contemplative.

Nothing compares to hearing the actual author read

Any additional comments?

I heard several readings of these poems on YouTube by students and other people, but NOTHING compares to hearing Dr. Maya Angelou read her own poems. She doesn't just read them, she PERFORMS them. You can hear the drama as she pulls you into the amazing stories that she has captured from her lifetime. You must hear these poems as she reads them. Simply reading them from a book does not compare.
