Publisher's summary
On May 21, 2013, the new novel from Khaled Hosseini: an unforgettable story about finding a lost piece of yourself in someone else.
Khaled Hosseini, the number-one New York Times best-selling author of The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns, has written a new novel about how we love, how we take care of one another, and how the choices we make resonate through generations. In this tale revolving around not just parents and children but brothers and sisters, cousins and caretakers, Hosseini explores the many ways in which families nurture, wound, betray, honor, and sacrifice for one another; and how often we are surprised by the actions of those closest to us, at the times that matter most. Following its characters and the ramifications of their lives and choices and loves around the globe—from Kabul to Paris to San Francisco to the Greek island of Tinos—the story expands gradually outward, becoming more emotionally complex and powerful with each passing minute.

Story
Why we think it’s a great listen: Never before has an author’s narration of his fiction been so important to fully grasping the book’s impact and global implications. Taking us from Afghanistan in the final days of its monarchy to the present, The Kite Runner is the unforgettable story of the friendship between two boys growing up in Kabul. Their intertwined lives, and their fates, reflect the eventual tragedy of the world around them.

Born a generation apart and with very different ideas about love and family, Mariam and Laila are two women brought jarringly together by war, by loss, and by fate. As they endure the ever escalating dangers around them, in their home as well as in the streets of Kabul, they come to form a bond that makes them both sisters and mother-daughter to each other, and that will ultimately alter the course not just of their own lives but of the next generation.

Story
Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is 12, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

Story
Young Hiram Walker was born into bondage. When his mother was sold away, Hiram was robbed of all memory of her - but was gifted with a mysterious power. Years later, when Hiram almost drowns in a river, that same power saves his life. This brush with death births an urgency in Hiram and a daring scheme: to escape from the only home he’s ever known. So begins an unexpected journey that takes Hiram from the corrupt grandeur of Virginia’s proud plantations to desperate guerrilla cells in the wilderness, from the coffin of the South to dangerously idealistic movements in the North.

Who you want people to be makes you blind to who they really are. It’s been a year since Billie Flanagan — a Berkeley mom with an enviable life — went on a solo hike in Desolation Wilderness and vanished from the trail. Her body was never found, just a shattered cellphone and a solitary hiking boot. Her husband and teenage daughter have been coping with Billie’s death the best they can: Jonathan drinks as he works on a loving memoir about his marriage; Olive grows remote, from both her father and her friends at the all-girls school she attends.

At 22, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother's death, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life: to hike the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State - and to do it alone. She had no experience as a long-distance hiker, and the trail was little more than “an idea, vague and outlandish and full of promise.” But it was a promise of piecing back together a life that had come undone.

An honor killing shatters and transforms the lives of Turkish immigrants in 1970s London. Internationally best-selling Turkish author Elif Shafak’s new novel is a dramatic tale of families, love, and misunderstandings that follows the destinies of twin sisters born in a Kurdish village. While Jamila stays to become a midwife, Pembe follows her Turkish husband, Adem, to London, where they hope to make new lives for themselves and their children. In London, they face a choice: stay loyal to the old traditions or try their best to fit in.

It's just a small story really, about, among other things, a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery. Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak's groundbreaking new novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can't resist: books.

Breathtaking!
Would you consider the audio edition of And the Mountains Echoed to be better than the print version?
Not often can a book squeeze tears from my eyes, but this one did . . . TWICE!!! Though, after reading "The Kite Runner" I considered Khaled Hosseini an emerging favorite, this book solidified his position.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I cried . . . TWICE!

Stories Within Stories
I felt there were too many short stories all within the big story. If it had not been for the excellent story telling capability of Khaled Hosseini, this book would have been a complete flop. As it is, it was like starting a new book every few chapters. I like to get into a book and the characters. This one kind of danced around the room.

Definitely not the Kite Runner
What did you like best about And the Mountains Echoed? What did you like least?
Decent story but so disjointed that it was hard to follow.
If you’ve listened to books by Khaled Hosseini before, how does this one compare?
Not as good as the Kite Runner
Did the narrators do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
Had a difficult time even understanding two of the narrators.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
Yes

Probably better as a print book
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I liked his prior books. This one is not his best, so I would only recommend it to people who are familiar with his work. I found the narration very distracting and, unlike most audiobooks, this one was easy to put down. I am struggling to finish it. I think this book probably is better in print.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of the narrators?
Not sure, but a stronger, deeper voice.
Do you think And the Mountains Echoed needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
No.

Another good book by this author
What didn’t you like about the narrators’s performance?
Found myself not able to listen in a relaxing mood but had to listen intensely to understand what narrator was saying. Another good book by Khaled Hosseini but unfortunately the audible presentation is spoiled by the narrators Navid Negahban & Shohreh Aghdashloo who have a very heavy accent that makes it really difficult to follow what they are saying. Mr. Hosseini should have read the whole book like he did his first two.
