Publisher's summary

Imagine being knocked over by a strange old man on a cold London morning. The man delivers a garbled message about the queen. Moments later he falls under the wheels of a train. The media calls it suicide, but you know better - something doesn't quite add up.

That was the start of the day for John Daniel, a foreign professional working in the city of London. Meanwhile, retired MI6 agent Adam Grey receives a call from an old informant: "Your service is rotten...." Soon Adam is dragged out of retirement, and John is dragged into the murky world of international espionage, politics, and jihadi terrorism.

An intense and explosive thriller that hits frighteningly close to the truth for a work of fiction.

Spy thriller

And the Wolf Shall Dwell. Gripping and fast paced, great storyline with lots of twists. This was my weekend read, and I loved it slightly reminiscent of Le Carre but unique in it's storyline. I would love to read more from Joni Dee. I do hope there is more.
Paul Jenkins narration is firsst class - suits those british set spy novels.

Like mushrooms after rain.

A spy thriller after the style of John Le Carre, this book is packed with constant twists and moves through different countries with international political intrigue, alliances and betrayals, and personal aspirations to the highest levels always with, as first consideration, the 'cover your back' attitude.

John Daniels has just launched his computer software, the efficacy of otherwise of which will determine his future job security, when an elderly man crashes into him in a London train station. Obviously being pursued by two bulky men, the old chap garbles out something to John about the Queen before continuing his flight to the train tracks: a scream, the screech of brakes - and the man is gone. Suicide? It certainly looked that way.
Retired spymaster Adam Grey is called back to service to investigate, and to take John under his protection. Grey had known the jumper: Henry Haft, also thought retired, had left a dossier for him. 'Your service is rotten,' he'd told Grey previously...

And so begins this exciting tale of intrigue and terrorism set during the time of the break up of the Soviet Union. The pace is fast, plot driven, but the author still finds time for shadow characterisation. The reader needs to listen carefully to keep up.
And fitting pace to text, narrator Paul Jenkins gives an excellent performance, his very English voice clear and well articulated, with good intonation and a whole cast of voicings of the numerous characters involved, complete with all of their various accents. His reading helps to drive this story forward, the seemingly insane decisions of some of the protagonists meeting in their dark but comfortable surroundings made almost sensible.

This is an impressive first novel especially since it is written in a genre especially difficult to cover: the spymaster and his shadowy world made thriller. My deep thanks to the rights holder of And the Wolf Shall Dwell, who, at my request via Audiobook Boom, freely gifted me a complimentary copy. As the author notes in an afterwards to the story, 'Reality surpasses any possible imagination.' it is to be hoped that Joni Dee's imagination continues to work on overdrive to produce further books as enjoyable as this one, and John, as promised, returns soon.

Great first in new series

I think for a first book in a new series by a new author it was good. I love spy novels and british too. The book does have lots of intrigue and really kept my interest until about half way. Then it was a little slow for me but about 3/4 of the way and I was all caught up into the story again. I loved the narration done by Paul Jenkins. His voice in my opinion was perfect. In the part I felt slowed down it was Paul's lovely voice that kept me listening. I look forward to more by this author.
I was gifted this audiobook with the understanding that I would leave an honest review.

A spy comes in from the cold

Adam Grey was a Cold War spy for Britain's MI6, although now he had retired. But when someone contacts MI6 using an old process and code, Grey has to come out of retirement to find out what the cryptic message is all about. And this time the trouble for England might go all the way to the top.

The story is interesting and realistic, tying together old school spy methods with newer skills like programming. The story is based in current world politics and terrorism and fells like it is at least plausible. The spy work here is grounded - more Jack Ryan than James Bond.

Generally the writing is good. There is times there is too much of an information dump. Where we are told background information or history on characters through the non-character narrator, whereas it would have been better for this information to come through in dialogue or internal reports between people within MI6. Just bringing this information into the story, rather than having it giving external to the story, would have improved the work.

Narration by Paul Jenkins is good. I liked his accents and characters. It made it easy to follow and distinguish what was going on. He was clear and well paced. Overall a good piece of narration and an enjoyable book.

Joni Dee has great descriptive writing and character development. Twists and turns holds your attention throughout.

Paul Jenkins does an excellent job narrating. His good diction and cadence creates tension and brings the characters to life.

International Intrigue

John Daniel, a foreign professional working in London, is walking to work thinking about a computer program he is working on that is about to be released and he is suddenly bumped into by a man in a hurry. The man is knocked down and while John is helping him up he mumbles incoherently to John some message about the queen. The man hurries off and later falls off the platform into an oncoming train. Media says suicide but John thinks perhaps not! Meanwhile, Adam Grey, a retired Spymaster from MI6, receives a call from an old informant and it's not long before both he and John are drawn into a world of international politics, intrigue, espionage, and terrorism. The plot is well woven and realistic to the happenings of today. The characters are well developed and the scenes are well described. Having been to London it was reminiscent reading about the various locales. Although I found it a little hard to follow at times, because of the complexity of the characters and story line, I would give it a solid 4.5 out of 5 on all counts. Great job for a first novel! high pace action

once the story starts picking up the action never really stops. It's a short novel so it's just constant constant spew of things happening. Which is fine because it's quality writing.

Great Spy Thriller

I was provided with a free copy of this work in exchange for an honest review.

This is a spy thriller with great intrigue from the very beginning. There are a lot of twists and turns throughout. I also enjoyed the great pairing between the retired spy Adam Grey and citizen John Daniel. John Daniel gets pulled into the action when he is at the train station and is bumped by an older man who whispers to John about the Queen and then kills himself. Everything which follows is foreign to John -- he doesn't know who to trust or how to proceed. Adam gains his trust and the adventure begins.

I really enjoyed this exciting story which traveled the world, had intrigue and terrorist acts. It does jump a bit between 1990 and the present -- which a few times caused me to get a bit lost but this could have been because I was listening to this book as opposed to reading it -- so it may not be a problem for readerss.

The narrator, Paul Jenkins, did a great job with all the different accents and setting the tone for the story rollercoaster ride.
