Publisher's summary
The latest rousing tale of sex, sleaze, and salvation in the City of Angels, featuring Dick Henry, the Shortcut Man, by p. g. sturges, whom Michael Connelly calls “a worthy successor to Chandler”. In Angel’s Gate, Dick Henry is drawn into a case involving an aging but still amorous Los Angeles movie mogul named Howard Hogue, who keeps a stable of twenty-plus young starlets available for his highly ritualized and private attentions... Henry is retained by the sister of a young woman who has gone missing and soon he is becoming friendly with Devi Stanton, the “housemother” to the starlets. Despite Devi’s morally questionable responsibilities, she is willing to help (and enjoy the company of) the Shortcut Man, a relationship that will be crucial to his survival. After Hogue’s star director batters one of the starlets in a drug-fueled romp, Henry is drawn into a deeper mystery from years past involving a haunting death on a boat and a missing screenplay written by what appears to be a local homeless man. As he peels back layer upon layer of sordid Hollywood history, Dick Henry must contend with crazed drug dealers, Hogue’s personal doctor, crooked cops, private security henchmen, and Hogue himself, who is so powerful and bunkered in his movie-biz millions that he is not intimidated by the ever-resourceful Henry. Amid a final showdown and genius plot twists, the Shortcut Man must outwit his opponents if he is to have any chance to survive.

Leland Gaunt opens a new shop in Castle Rock called Needful Things. Anyone who enters his store finds the object of his or her lifelong dreams and desires: a prized baseball card, a healing amulet. In addition to a token payment, Gaunt requests that each person perform a little "deed", usually a seemingly innocent prank played on someone else from town. These practical jokes cascade out of control, and soon the entire town is doing battle with itself. Only Sheriff Alan Pangborn suspects that Gaunt is behind the population's increasingly violent behavior.

Story
This novel by Carl Hiaasen, author of Tourist Season and Native Tongue, begins as most thrillers do, with a killing. But this is no everyday, hum-drum, garden variety killing. Our hero, Nick Stranahan, a 42-year-old private investigator who has killed five men and been married five times, skewers his attacker's aorta with the razor-sharp bill of a stuffed marlin.

With a strict set of criteria, she evaluates every request and chooses only a few. No more than one job per country, per year. She will only step in if it's clear that justice will not be served any other way. Her jobs are completed with skill and precision, and never result in inquiry or police investigation. The Fixer is invisible - and quite deadly.

So far he's rid of the world of nobody who would be missed. But this time he finds himself zeroing in on the grieving family of a missing cheerleader. Does the hitman's hitman have the wrong quarry in his sights?

He's a self-described beach bum who won his houseboat in a card game. He's also a knight errant who's wary of credit cards, retirement benefits, political parties, mortgages, and television. He only works when his cash runs out, and his rule is simple: he'll help you find whatever was taken from you, as long as he can keep half.

Number Three Hits the Spot!
Where does Angel's Gate rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Of the HUNDREDS of audiobooks I own, seriously, I stopped counting at 280, this is in the top ten favorites list!
What other book might you compare Angel's Gate to and why?
You can't compare stories. I would say that the character Dick Henry (P.G. Sturges), though not similar, has the same appeal as the characters James Bond (Ian Flemming), Lisbeth Salander (Stieg Larsson), and Eve Dallas (J.D. Robb). You just want to hear more from this character!
Which scene was your favorite?
When the ex-marine house mother explains to Dick Henry exactly why she needs his help!
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I'm usually a "good triumphs over evil" person, so I would have to say that when the really, really, sleazy guy is arrested for murdering the really, sleazy guy, and Dick Henry's ex-partner gets the credit - it made me feel good!
Any additional comments?
The story line was amazing! Sad but true, meets ego central! Can't wait for the next Shortcut Man story!
