Story
Over thirty million people have read The Diary of a Young Girl, the journal teen-aged Anne Frank kept while living in an attic with her family and four other people in Amsterdam during World War II, until the Nazis arrested them and sent them to a concentration camp. But despite the many works—journalism, books, plays and novels—devoted to Anne’s story, none has ever conclusively explained how these eight people managed to live in hiding undetected for over two years—and who or what finally brought the Nazis to their door.

Story
Seventy years ago, Joe Rubinstein walked out of a Nazi concentration camp. Until now, his story has been hidden from the world. Shortly before dawn on a frigid morning in Radom, Poland, 21-year-old Joe answered a knock at the door of the cottage he shared with his widowed mother and siblings. German soldiers forced him onto a crowded open-air truck. Wearing only an undershirt and shorts, Joe was left on the truck with no protection from the cold. By the next morning, several around him would be dead. From there, things got worse for young Joe, much worse.

Story
It's just a small story really, about, among other things, a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery. Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak's groundbreaking new novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can't resist: books.

Story
A story of heartbreak and survival by the stepsister of Anne Frank. Eva was arrested by the Nazis on her 15 birthday and sent to Auschwitz. Her survival depended on endless strokes of luck, her own determination and the love and protection of her mother, Fritzi, who was deported with her. When Auschwitz was liberated, Eva and Fritzi began the long journey home. They searched desperately for Eva's father and brother, from whom they had been separated. The news came some months later. Tragically, both men had been killed.

Publisher's summary
The definitive edition.
Discovered in the attic in which she spent the last years of her life, Anne Frank’s remarkable diary has since become a world classic - a powerful reminder of the horrors of war and an eloquent testament to the human spirit.
In 1942, with Nazis occupying Holland, a 13-year-old Jewish girl and her family fled their home in Amsterdam and went into hiding. For the next two years, until their whereabouts were betrayed to the Gestapo, they and another family lived cloistered in the “Secret Annex” of an old office building. Cut off from the outside world, they faced hunger, boredom, the constant cruelties of living in confined quarters, and the ever-present threat of discovery and death. In her diary Anne Frank recorded vivid impressions of her experiences during this period. By turns thoughtful, moving, and amusing, her account offers a fascinating commentary on human courage and frailty and a compelling self-portrait of a sensitive and spirited young woman whose promise was tragically cut short.
Critic reviews
"The new edition reveals a new depth to Anne's dreams, irritations, hardship, and passions....There may be no better way to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II than to reread
The Diary of a Young Girl, a testament to an indestructive nobility of spirit in the face of pure evil." (Chicago Tribune)
“The single most compelling personal account of the Holocaust...remains astonishing and excruciating.” (The New York Times Book Review)

Story
In name and by birth, Celia was a Dunne. She had inherited the beautiful old family home by the Rydd Water – but was she bound to live her life by the principles of her predecessors? Was there some hidden restraint that compelled her to heed the past? Celia’s house is a moving and poignant story of the struggle between old and young: the older generation anxious to preserve the values they have helped create while their children are determined at all costs to make lives of their own.

Story
Julie would remember her happy days at Aunt Cordelia’s forever. Running through the spacious rooms, singing on rainy nights in front of the blazing fireplace. There were rides in the woods on Peter the Great, the races with Danny Trevort. Maybe best of all were the precious moments alone in her room at night, gazing at the sea of stars. But there was sadness too - the painful jealousy Julie felt after her sister got married, the tragic death of a schoolmate, and the bitter disappointment of her first love. Sometimes it all seemed like too much to handle.

For eight weeks in 1945, as Berlin fell to the Russian army, a young woman kept a daily record of life in her apartment building and among its residents. The anonymous author depicts her fellow Berliners in all their humanity, as well as their cravenness, corrupted first by hunger and then by the Russians. A Woman in Berlin tells of the complex World War II relationship between civilians and an occupying army and the shameful indignities to which women in a conquered city are always subject—the mass rape suffered by all, regardless of age or infirmity.

Anne Frank is the most well-known victim of the Holocaust. In 1945, at the age of 15, she died at Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, becoming one of the six million Jews who were murdered in Europe under the Nazi regime. But through her writing, her memory lives on. Jemma Saunders goes beyond Anne Frank's diary to fill in the gaps about her family history, her life before she went into hiding, and her final months at Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. A sobering tale, Anne Frank's story is one that will continue to inspire for decades to come.

Anne Frank’s story is definitely a tragic one; every aspect of it is steeped in the tragedy of the Holocaust. But sadness is not the only thing the account of Anne Frank’s life has to offer - it’s a powerful story about a girl who wasn’t afraid to stand up for what was right. She faced the worst that humanity has to offer, and she did not let it corrupt her. Even the evil oppression of Hitler’s Nazi regime could never crush the indomitable spirit of Anne Frank. In this audiobook, you will discover her life; this is her story.

Have you listened to any of Selma Blair’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Any additional comments?
After reading this book I felt sadness for her, her family and friends. It helped me get a better understanding of who Anne Frank was and what she experienced. Her voice is so pleasant and fits Anne well.

Classic Heartbreaking story.
This is a classic inspiring story of a young woman wiser than her years. It is a story of hope amongst despair. I loved the narrator.

This should be required reading in school
I just turned 49 years old and had never read this book. My daughter is in 7th grade (12 yrs. old) and has a list of classic books that she can choose to read to fulfill her reading logs. Like me, she doesn't enjoy reading a lot of books, so I told her that whatever she chose, I would read as well. I thought that my involvement and commitment might help her, and at my age felt it's time to read some of the classics.
The thoughts and feelings of an young girl going through such unthinkable times was very sad, but very awakening. I am so happy that I chose to read this with my daughter and look forward to our next read.
The reason I feel this should be required reading is not just about the history of what happened in this time period, but to have children in today's world realize how good they have it. Anne's thoughts about life and emotions at her age are very relatable to pre-teen and young teenagers of today. Even though her circumstances were extreme, kids today can relate to her thoughts and feeling and apply them to any challenges they are facing. If Anne could push through, so can they.
I don't understand the negative comments on Selma Blair's narration. She was speaking in the tone of a young woman trying to figure out who she was in a very difficult time. I think she did a tremendous job. I also don't understand those that said it was too graphic for 12-15 year old kids. Kids know the basics of female/male anatomy at this age and it was nothing explicit. Just a quick description while she was talking with the boy she was with in hiding.
I hope this helps and you enjoy it as much as I did.

First time hearing about this book at age 39.
Great Narration by Selma Blair. I felt like I was listening to Anne herself. I recommend listening to the Diary. You feel like you are there.. just sad for the ending. We pretty much know how it ended.. glad that the Father survived and was able to finish the Diary for us. Anne was a beautiful young lady with a beautiful soul. She deserved better and so did Peter and Margo.

Incredible story
What an unbelievable story about survival! We are so lucky to have this perspective of what it was like for them - even though in the end, we all wish the story had a different ending.
Selma Blair does a great job reading the book too!
