Publisher's summary

Sheriff Walt Longmire had already rounded up a sizable posse of devoted readers when the A&E television series Longmire sent the Wyoming lawman’s popularity skyrocketing. Now, in Any Other Name, Walt is sinking into high-plains winter discontent when his former boss, Lucian Conally, asks him to take on a mercy case in an adjacent county. Detective Gerald Holman is dead and Lucian wants to know what drove his old friend to take his own life. With the clock ticking on the birth of his first grandchild, Walt learns that the by-the-book detective might have suppressed evidence concerning three missing women. Digging deeper, Walt uncovers an incriminating secret so dark that it threatens to claim other lives even before the sheriff can serve justice - Wyoming style.

and the beat goes on.......

If you're a Walt Longmire fan you'll want to listen to this book but I don't know that it's the best in the series. The plot to me was kind of sketchy to be set in a really small town in Wyoming, I just don't see it happening. But, the creative, witty writing of Craig Johnson is there and that's why you listen. The stage is also set for some future action so that's another reason to listen. Since I listened to my last Longmire the TV series on A&E has been canceled, supposedly due to the average age of viewers being 60 and conventional TV wisdom being that for advertisers the age range must be 18 to 49. In listening to this book it is true that many of the characters are older but in my opinion still enjoyable. Maybe the author should take heed and add some youth and spice into the series. I don't know, that's his call and maybe he doesn't want to. I will say that the TV series took some serious liberties with the series as laid out in the books and part of me is saying I'm OK the TV show got canceled so I don't have to experience these parallel Longmire worlds. From what I've read they TV producers are looking for another TV channel to carry the series but at this writing nothing has been done. C'mon, Craig Johnson, give us another good Longmire, your version.

I skipped sleep to finish this

My other half and I are addicted to this colorful series of novels. We love the humor, sharp dialogue, twist & turns, and fast pace of these books. This novel includes coal cars, snow storms, physical injuries, hallucinations, and flying bullets. Where does Craig Johnson come up with so many ideas?

In “Any Other Name”, Walt is supposed to be on his way to be with Cady, his daughter, for the arrival of his first grandchild, a girl, but he gets roped into helping Lucian, the former sheriff of his county, with a new case. The case, however, is one that is considered to be a closed case in the neighboring county of Gillette and ultimately takes him to Deadwood, South Dakota in the Black Hills.

As usual, the case turns out to be much more dangerous and more complicated than Walt thought. At least he has help from all of my favorite supporting characters: Henry, Vic, and Dog. Plus Virgil White Buffalo makes a return with other new characters.

As his investigation progresses Walt starts to realize that this is not just about the declared suicide of an officer in the neighboring jurisdiction. It is a much larger conspiracy that implicates a whole chain of unsavory characters as well as those you would guess to be law-abiding citizens.

The clock is ticking and Cady threatens that there will be a whole new investigation into Walt’s death if he does not arrive on time.

I recommend any of these books but they are best read in order to fully enjoy all the nuances and innuendos carried throughout the series.

Addicting, that's what Longmire is.

Stories are always strong, people real, and endings worth the wait. I have replayed the book just to hear the humor and feel the cold again.
