Publisher's summary

The year is 1895. London is scared. A killer haunts the city's streets. The poor are hungry. Crime bosses are taking control. The police force is stretched to the breaking point.

The rich turn to Sherlock Holmes, but the celebrated private detective rarely visits the densely populated streets of South London, where the crimes are sleazier and the people are poorer.

In the dark corner of Southwark, victims turn to a man who despises Holmes, his wealthy clientele, and his showy forensic approach to crime: Arrowood - self-taught psychologist, occasional drunkard, and private investigator.

When a man mysteriously disappears and Arrowood's best lead is viciously stabbed before his eyes, he and his sidekick, Barnett, face their toughest quest yet: to capture the head of the most notorious gang in London.

In the best-selling tradition of Anthony Horowitz and Andrew Taylor, this gloriously dark crime debut will haunt listeners long after it is over.

Critic reviews

"A top-notch performance by Malk Williams makes Mick Finlay's debut novel as good as it gets.... Here's hoping for more from Finlay and Williams." (AudioFile)

Overrated. Implausible ending.

Liked details about life in London at that time. Story was engaging until the end destroyed my desire to read another of this series.

The Equivalent of a Page Turner

A page turner for sure. Haven’t heard an audiobook that kept my interest like this one in a long time.

Puts You in the Time Period

I really enjoyed this story. I felt like I was in 19th century England around the time of Jack the Ripper and Sherlock Holmes. The twists and turns of the story line made me try to guess what was actually going on, only to continually surprise me.

Fantastic detective story

Great story, great narration. Hard to ask for much more than that. Definitely worth an audible credit out the price.

Great Listen / Read

I was skeptical at first and then very intrigued and entertained. I liked the Sherlock rivalry and thought it added to the characterization and my sympathy. I loved the supportive arguments for each case. I myself have been critical of Holmes (well Doyle, actually) but deep down we’re still fanboys and fangirls, like Arrowood. Go on…spend a credit on this one. Ballsy writing.

Too much made of Sherlock Holmes rivalry

I tried to like Arrowood as a character, but t didn’t happen. Told from the pint of view of Arrowood’s Dr. Watson, made the plot harder to enjoy because narrator apologizing for Arrowwood not giving Sherlock his due took precedence. I kept waiting for clever insights into solving the case but the plot devolved into more of a police procedural.

Enjoyable

I enjoyed this mystery and the engaging characters. The addition of Sberlock Holmes as a rival to Arrowood was fun. The plot was well developed and had interesting twists. The narrator was excellent.

struggled to finish it.

I was so expecting a Sherlock Holmes like story. Instead, I got a much slower moving, less interesting, and less surprising version. The setting and timing of the story as well as the performance, kept my interest enough to finish it.
