Publisher's summary

Peopled by larger-than-life heroes and villains, charged with towering questions of good and evil, Atlas Shrugged is Ayn Rand’s magnum opus: a philosophical revolution told in the form of an action thriller—nominated as one of America’s best-loved novels by PBS’s The Great American Read.

Atlas Shrugged is the "second most influential book for Americans today" after the Bible, according to a joint survey of five thousand people conducted by the Library of Congress and the Book of the Month Club in 1991.

In a scrap heap within an abandoned factory, the greatest invention in history lies dormant and unused. By what fatal error of judgment has its value gone unrecognized, its brilliant inventor punished rather than rewarded for his efforts?

This is the story of a man who said that he would stop the motor of the world—and did. In defense of those greatest of human qualities that have made civilization possible, he sets out to show what would happen to the world if all the heroes of innovation and industry went on strike. Is he a destroyer or a liberator? Why does he have to fight his battle not against his enemies but against those who need him most? Why does he fight his hardest battle against the woman he loves? The answers will be revealed once you discover the reason behind the baffling events that wreak havoc on the lives of the amazing men and women in this remarkable book.

Tremendous in scope and breathtaking in its suspense, Atlas Shrugged is Ayn Rand's magnum opus, which launched an ideology and a movement. With the publication of this work in 1957, Rand gained an instant following and became a phenomenon. Atlas Shrugged emerged as a premier moral apologia for capitalism, a defense that had an electrifying effect on millions of readers (and now listeners) who had never heard capitalism defended in other than technical terms.

Iconic book with wonderful reading performance

I highly recommend this book to many for multiple reasons. The work itself by Rand is iconic. It’s arguably one of the greatest literary works ever! Scott Bricks performance in bringing this piece to life is second to none. If your up for it, don’t pass this up!

An excellent work

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Although I will never listen to it again because of all the cussing. There is plenty of content in the book that could be left out. I ended up fast forwarding many of the sensuous encounters. If it did not have all the cussing and immoral activity it may have been a favorite of mine. Listener beware.

Rand gets a lot right, but in the wrong way.

Many of the ideas in this book are spot on, but their motivations are perverted. It’s a good story, besides the hour long radio monologue. It’s just a repeat of things already said many other times in the book. I wonder if the author was sexually frustrated, because she spends an awful lot of time and energy portraying strange sexual relationships, and the thoughts that accompany them, in this book.

Ayn Rand’s book has come alive through Scott Brick’s voice.

Scott Brick’s narration is a masterful performance! No other voice and delivery could do justice to Ayn Rand’s masterpiece the way Scott Brick does. It has been one of the most memorable experiences to listen to this book.

Universally applicable in any time

love this book. it is needed. may be one of the only books kids should be asked to read. it feels like it is needed more now than ever, but that is probably what everyone feels when they read it.
enjoy it and learn from it

Enduring.

This novel stands the test of time. Regardless of how you feel about the philosophy, its presentation is masterfully created into a story here. As for the philosophy itself, decide for yourself.

Worth every minute, this could have been written about today’s looters described so vividly inside.
