Publisher's summary

Following an attack on her Amish community, Esther is hospitalized for a serious injury. Her hospital stay is lengthy, and during her time there, she meets Dr. Sterling Jamison. He is more than a doctor; he becomes a friend. He asks her many questions about her community.

When Esther returns to her community, she needs to adapt to the lifelong effects of her injury. But that isn't the only thing that Esther will have to get used to. Several other people were injured in the attack. Some were even killed, including Esther's love match, Marcus. Esther's sister Annie kept this from her during the hospitalization, fearing that her sister might give up on hearing the news.

Doctor Jamison visits Esther in the Amish community to be able to keep track of her progress. He also takes her to physical therapy appointments. Annie fears that her sister is going to get her heart broken by the doctor.

Through Esther's faith and love of her community, Doctor Jamison also gets a healthy interest in what Amish life is like. He takes a few weeks to visit the community and live as the people there do, including helping Esther in her garden.

Eventually Doctor Jamison considers becoming baptized so that he can be a part of the community that has come to mean so much to him. Does he decide to join the Amish community, and does he and Esther discover a connection that goes beyond that of doctor and patient? Annie is extremely skeptical of the doctor and wants to protect her sister from getting hurt. Will they be able to reconcile their ways? And can they maintain their faith even in the aftermath of the devastation that happened in their community?
