Publisher's summary

The Baron's Ward is an entertaining and uplifting adventure story set in a medieval-like fantasy world. It is also included in the award-winning collection The Venturous Tales by Isabella Berdyna Zysk.

Eustacia Rose, a mixed-race young woman, was orphaned at the age of eight and sent far away to a convent school. She believes that her father's cousin, Lord Eustace, the Baron of Galeva, wishes to cut off relations between them. Though he pays for her schooling for eight years, he never replies to her letters.

At the age of eighteen, having completed two years as a teacher in the convent school, she is on her way to seek employment as a lady's scribe when she's robbed of her money and few belongings. She seeks help from the baron, only to find that he has moved to his country estate and is in poor health. His scribe, Master Alfred, takes her to the estate. There, she is shocked to learn that the baron believes that she has been the one not answering his letters for all these years and that he considers her an ingrate. Alfred becomes suspicious that both have been deceived about the other. But who would do such a thing and why?
