Sir Derek Jacobi reads a collection of tales from the master of ghost stories, M. R. James, whose stories have for many years inspired the BBC's A Ghost Story for Christmas TV adaptations. M. R. James was described as "a man who, in company with Sheridan le Fanu, is the best ghost-story writer England has ever produced".Public Domain (P)2014 Audible, Inc. This book, and volume two, are very good for the newcomer to M.R. James's work. The only downside to this anthology is perhaps the fact some of his best stories are not included. I would have loved to have heard Jacobi's take on "Casting The Runes".

An (Almost) Excellent Introduction.

It was enjoyable listen as long as you don’t expect to be scared by stories of this time period

I love British stories, especially Victorian-Era ones. Although ghost or horror stories are not my favorite genre, I do like a well-written tale (Dr. Jekyll, Dracula and the like). This first collection of M.T. James' work is entertaining, mostly due the exceptional narration by Derek Jacobi. The stories themselves are fine enough but not particularly scary or surprising. Overall the collection is an interesting look into the not too distant past.

Derek Jakobi is the best part of this collection

A defining performance by Sir Derek Jacobi. The stories themselves need no introduction and I’ve never tired of hearing or reading them again. And now for Volume 2 !

A corker. Best heard before Christmas.
