Chicago-born Armstrong Tom is fifteen, black and unused to the segregated ways of the Deep South when his mother sends him to spend the summer with relatives in her native rural Mississippi. For speaking a few innocuous words in French to a white woman, Armstrong pays the ultimate price when her husband and his friends come to teach him a lesson.

Each of these characters-white and black- are changed, then, and forever, by the horror of poverty, the legacy of justice, and love's power to heal.©1994 Bebe Moore Campbell, Abridgment Approved by the Author; (P) and ©1994 Time Warner AudioBooks and Juneteenth Audio Books, Time Warner AudioBooks Is a Joint Venture of The Atlantic Group and Time Warner Trade Publishing

This book is a classic, i read it when it was first released. So when I saw that it was Audio I thought great! But I was really disappointed with this audio version. The sound quality was terrible, It left out big portions of the story. If you ever get a chance to read it you will really enjoy it.

abridge sucks

The only issue with this audiobook is that it literally cuts out all of the chapters with Clayton in it and that’s like a good third of the book. Smh

Great story, good performance, so what the heck?!

Would you try another book from Bebe Moore Campbell and/or Alfre Woodard and Allison Smith ?

Yes. Defintely. This is a great book but Caution it is the abridged version and left out a lot of relevant information. I read a hard copy of this before I listened to this so it was not as good.

the book is great, there is a chapter missing. I checked the actual book. I definitely recommend this book, the details, the way the author describes all of the characters thoughts, well done. Everyone should read this, we are no better than those we judged.
