Francis Parkman's journal - written more than 150 years ago, in 1846 - provides an eye-witness account of one of the grandest adventures in American history. At age 23, the Harvard-educated Bostonian traveled the Rocky Mountains, living among the Dakota Sioux. In his journal, he captured the color, spirit, and perspective of his era, as well as the exuberant confidence that was the mark of his time. Frank Muller's dramatic reading brings this captivating record to life.

listening to this journal of an 1846 young man's adventures from Boston to the Rocky Mountains made me realize that people of that generation saw the resources & bount of our country as a bottomless pit. Hearing how they hunted the Buffalo, deer, & wolves almost to extinction, taking only the pelts & some of the choice meats, leaving the rest to rot saddens me. I who was born 100 years later never got to see these animals other than in photos. I am happy my children's generation has worked to bring these animals back.

Well to start off they never taught this to us in school. Parkman is a great story teller and Muller is a tremendous narrator. I learned so much. All the details about the Indians, the bison, how the Indian women built their teepees, cooked their food. Don’t know if I could do raw heart and liver, yuck. But very educational and not boring. Recommend

An amazing picture of an amazing time and place. America’s move west was unlike any other episode in human history, drawn in a perspective of the time.
