I hope, for your sake, that you have not chosen to read this book because you are in the mood for a pleasant experience. If this is the case, I advise you to put this book down instantaneously, because of all the books describing the unhappy lives of the Baudelaire orphans, The Miserable Mill might be the unhappiest yet. Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire are sent to Paltryville to work in a lumber mill, and they find disaster and misfortune lurking behind every log. The pages of this book, I'm sorry to inform you, contain such unpleasantries as a giant pincher machine, a bad casserole, a man with a cloud of smoke where his head should be, a hypnotist, a terrible accident resulting in injury, and coupons. I have promised to write down the entire history of these three poor children, but you haven't, so if you prefer stories that are more heartwarming, please feel free to make another selection.

With all due respect,

Lemony Snicket

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I have shared listening to this book with my daughter, we both enjoyed it very much and has been an ideal way to pass the driving time to and from school, and has elicited great conversation in us. She has read all the actual books and together we have listened to the previous three as well. We'll finish the series, which we find so enjoyable. We recommend it.

What other book might you compare The Miserable Mill to and why?

The rest of the books in the seires

We both laughed and cried!

Excellent choice

Miserable mill, uplifting

The narration sucks. The foreman's voice is DEAFENING while everything else sounds inaudible. I was trying to listen to this as I sleep.

Terrible Narration

It was great but the adult voices were so loud it hurt my ears. Yet, if I turned it down I couldn't hear the main narration, since that was so quiet.

Adult voices too loud, narrative too soft

Unlike other reviewers, I enjoy Snicket's (Handler) narration. However, I was not even able to finish listening because the audio of the narration is so much softer than the dialogue. I listen to go to sleep and after turning up the volume enough to hear Snicket, the characters were basically screaming at me. In addition this book is undoubtedly the worst in the series and not worth rereading like all the other books. I adore the entire SOUE franchise but this book has always stood out to me as dull.

Difficult to listen to

So every time the author spoke for a character it would get significantly louder and then back to the story would get so quite that I could barely hear. It was a little frustrating to keep turning the volume up and down. Otherwise I love these books, my favorite series!
