In this sweeping saga, three Swedish sisters endure an 1890s Atlantic crossing, an Ellis Island detention, and various other trials as they struggle to find love, faith, and home.

First came their mother's death. Then their father's suicide. For orphans Elin, Kirsten, and Sofia, life stretches on like an endless winter. When circumstances become unbearable, they write their Chicago relatives, desperate for a safe haven. Soon the three find themselves among the huddled masses bound for America - the promised land of dreams and second chances. Yet amidst the hardships of their journey, these brave young ladies determine to let nothing stop them from reaching a place they can call home.

Lynn Austin does not disappoint. However, the readers voice seemed too old for the young girls in the story

facinating and heart-warming story

I LOVED the story. It kept me intrigued. I nearly returned it though, at the beginning of the book, because of the narrator. The book is about three girls ranging from 16-19 years old. The narrator sounds as though she is in her upper years. The voice did not match the characters. While the narrator bothered me throughout the story, the story itself was enough to keep me going.

Wonderful book. Narrator not compatible.

Such joy it is to listen to this book! The wonderful characters and the quality of this great narration made it so hard to stop the playing of it even though it is well past my bedtime!

Outstanding Book! Exceptional Narration!

I would love a sequel to this. Is there one that I've missed? The story is well written with strong characters and picturesque descriptions. The Narrator is also excellent. A great story with excellent historical data emphasizing the problems and fears of starting over in America and coming through Ellis Island. Very fine work all around.

An excellent story. Didn't want it to end.

This is a wonderful story about love and forgiveness and faith. Unfortunately the narrator almost makes it difficult to get through. She has a raspy voice and every character men and women sound the same. It seems there is no attempt to give character or differences to the individual characters.

Great Story if you can get past the narrator
