Old Man Hawkins was a larger-than-life character among deer hunters, or, more precisely, among tellers and hearers of tall tales. His self-proclaimed method of hunting deer by holding a mirror in one hand and his rifle in the other, pointing backward over a shoulder, was, he said, "to be fair to the deer". It was a story, Davis tells us, that would occupy his father on the drive to Grandma's house.©2002 Donald Davis (P)2002 August House Publishers, Inc. Editorial reviews

Donald Davis is a storyteller extraordinaire. He keeps tall tales fun and interesting with his versatile delivery, music, and vocal sound effects. For instance, his crying is just how it would probably sound to young listeners - boohoohoohoo. His voice and delivery realistically capture the time and feeling of the zany stories. Regarding grandma and her naughty grandkids, Davis says "Stories would sneak up on us when she needed to teach us something." Great fun and an excellent vocal window on different places and times.

I was tickled to find one more of Donald Davis' stories in the Audible Plus catalog. When the story of Old Man Hawkins started up (a story that Davis' father told on the way to Grandma's house), I was trying to picture in my mind what yarn he was going to come up with. 😂 Well, nothing I could've imagined could compare. Old Man Hawkins had them all buffaloed into thinking he was an expert hunter. What a funny and great tale it is! A lot like the old woman who swallowed the fly . . . it goes on and on . . . and I absolutely love it. Southern Storytelling . . . AT ITS VERY BEST! Donald's grandma also had his number when he was a kid, I can see, from these wonderful stories. 🤣 He couldn't pull much wool over Grandma's eyes. Please add more of the Donald Davis tales to the Audible Plus catalog!

Old Man Hawkins 🤣 Akin to Woman Swallowing Fly

Funny, and relatable, country bumpkin stories, told by Donald Davis, the best storyteller. He can make you feel like you are right there, as it happens.

Donald Davis, best storyteller!

I have trouble rating Do and Davis lower than 5 stars. He is a great storyteller of Southern yarns. In this one, he recounts a story his dad told them on a drive to their grandmas house.
I've liked all the stories by this author/narrator.

Another funny story

I was in the mood for something short and light. This fit the bill perfectly. Great stories, like gramma used to tell.

so fun
