Coroner Martha Gunn is among the first to be called to the scene when a man's body is found in a small cottage fronting the river. A bit slow moving, but good listen

If you could sum up River Deep: Martha Gunn, Book 1 in three words, what would they be?

Interesting, meandering, surprise-ending

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

No, far from it. It is the story of Martha Gunn, a coroner who is technically and ethically not supposed to be doing any detecting on her own, but whose natural curiosity pushes her into it anyway. This is not a fast-paced CSI style book, but comes closer to the slowly unfolding classic detective story--with the twist that the main character is not allowed to be a snoop. Part of what is interesting are the ways she can get around the rules to do that anyway.

What about Patricia Gallimore’s performance did you like?

I thought she did a good job of making all the voices clear and distinct, but a few sounded rather "forced." I found myself wishing she might have read just a tad faster, but she still did a good enough job with the book.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It has a good, unexpected ending.

Any additional comments?

I felt that Martha's character was well-developed. I had a good sense of who she is, what had occurred in her background to bring her to where she is in the book, but the other characters (mostly those she works with) we're sadly undeveloped (to my taste), but that leaves room for more in future books in the series.

Great read

This is a very good book. I love Martha and her side need of playing sleuth as well as being a coroner. She is a smart and intriguing character. I look forward to reading more about Martha and her cases. The reader is very good as well. I think a reader can make or break even a good book.

Intrigue makes for complications

I’ve been on the hunt for British thrillers with a coroner/forensics angle, and “River Deep” hit the mark. It’s Book 1 of Priscilla Masters’ Martha Gunn series, and it just showed up on Audible Plus at no extra cost. Patricia Gallimore’s narration is exquisite. Proper British cadence, steady tension, and she makes Martha Gunn feel sharp and real from page one. Fair warning though: This plot is seriously intricate. Follow closely. I took a few zigzags and landed right at the corner of Confusion and Bewilderment. Might’ve just been me. Each to their own.

Predictable but still entertaining

This story was predictable from the outset. I still found it entertaining and was a pleasant distraction while working. i would recommend it to any mystery enthusiast.

Sooooo slow . . . But still very readable!

This story was quite slow in the telling. I’m glad I stuck with it—if only to proof myself right. I had my suspicions early on. After Martha and the police kept going round and round the bend in one direction, the solution became fairly obvious.
As slow as it was, I became vested in the characters. I’ll definitely read the next one.
