This intriguing, influential work of literature—an outstanding way to experience Zen—is now available on cd
It is almost impossible to understand Zen by studying it as you would other intellectual pursuits. The best way to understand Zen is, simply, to Zen. This is what author Eugen Herrigel allows us to do by sharing his own fascinating journey toward a comprehension of this illuminating philosophy. In Japan, an art such as archery is not practiced solely for utilitarian purposes such as learning to hit targets. Archery is also meant to train the mind and bring it into contact with the ultimate reality. If one really wishes to be master of an art, technical knowledge of it is not enough. One has to transcend technique so that the art becomes an "artless art" growing out of the Unconsciousness. In this way, as the author simply, clearly demonstrates, archery becomes a path to greater understanding and enlightenment.

Critic reviews

“In this wonderful little book, Mr. Herrigel, a German philosopher who came to Japan and took up the practice of archery toward an understanding of Zen, gives an illuminating account of his own experience. Through his expression, the western reader will find a more familiar manner of dealing with what very often must seem to be a strange and somewhat unapproachable Eastern experience.” —D.T. Suzuki, author of Zen in Japanese Culture

I enjoyed the book and it's content.

In regards to the narrator, as other reviews stated, his "master" voice is somewhat grating. I found that the mixing of this audiobook could use a lot of work as there is a constant sound that the narrator makes that sounds like he is thirsty and there is a smacking noise that made the book unbearable to listen to.

If that sort of noise bothers you, pick up the physical book.

Good content, bad sound mixing

I have had meditation classes and breathing instructions. Now that I am taking archery lessons to improve my shooting skill, this has helped to put somethings into prospective, like the breathing and relaxing. Let "It" take the shot has still has me lost. This was recommended by the person that is instructing me, he is an experienced bow maker, hunter and archery instructor.

Must practice Zen

Would you listen to Zen in the Art of Archery again? Why?

This book was a wonderful listen for me. The performance was wonderful and if you are walking and listening to this book (not in a hurry) it slowly becomes your companion and a powerful, caring teacher.
Enjoy!

loved it and enjoyed the narration and settle background music. Will listen to this more than once to envision the masters described teaching me in my physical pursuits leading me towards "the spirit" as referred to in the book.

It is a wonderful story but the story is of no importance . The worths of the master and the thoughts of the student are the real gem in this book.
