Novelist Marlon James had his first book nominated as a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and his second book named a New York Times Editor’s Choice. In this, his third novel, a failing preacher in 1957 Jamaica is ousted by a fiery newcomer who sends the congregation into a frenzy of spiritual awakening—and violence.

Any additional comments?

Slow start. The characters were typical but well rounded. I found myself become very irritated with the blind faith of these characters which means the author did a great job of forming them and exposing their flaws. The ending was not expected. I loved the setting and the cultural beliefs of the characters. They reminded me of several family members! Overall, pretty good read.

Slow but surprising

Loved the story and the familiar cultural references. The author did a fantastic job of bringing each character to life. He left no holes or gaps in the story. Can't wait to read other works.
I love Robin Miles, the narrator, but her accent missed the mark on this one. The listen would have been 10x better had been narrated by a native Jamaican.

Entertaining

Personally love Marlon James’s books because of the realism when he talks about spirtualism and juju. This was an interesting read that I’m surprised I liked only because I thought it started off a little funny but of course character development is on point and narration is *chefs kiss* Robin Miles alwayssss gets the job done!

Great book about the complexities of religion and spirituality

I always love listening to James’s books. This one was no different. The story itself is very interesting and there’s a lot to unpack. Rural VS urban. Educated VS “backwards”. Good VS evil. God VS devil. And sex throughout. This is worth listening to but hard to hear about the child abuse.

Amazing reading of this unique story
