The day before Halloween 2004 was the last day on Earth for respected, well-liked college professor Fred Jablin. That morning, a neighbor discovered his body lying in a pool of blood in the driveway of Jablin's Virginia home. Police immediately turned their attentions to the victim's ex-wife, Piper, a petite, pretty Texas lawyer who had lost a bitter custody battle and would do anything to get her kids back. But Piper was in Houston, 1,000 miles away, at the time of the slaying and couldn't possibly have been the killer...could she?

So began an investigation into one of the most bizarre cases Virginia and Texas law enforcement agencies had ever encountered: a twisted conspiracy of lies, rage, paranoia, manipulation, and savage murder that would ensnare an entire family - including two lethally close look-alike sisters - and reveal the shocking depravities possible when a dangerously disordered mind slips into madness.

For context, I listen to true crime audiobooks and podcasts all day, every day. It's some sort of fascination of mine--and I am embarrassingly versed in the genre. I LOVED THIS BOOK--and I *rarely* say that about true crime books. Most have tons of flaws. Not this guy.

Bullet points to condense enthusiasm:
• A fairly unknown story
• Insane, batpoop characters who are SO interesting
• Great narrator--clearly knows where the dips are, and when paragraphs end
• Entire thing not just court trial proceedings
• C'mon, Ann Rule loves it. Freakin' Ann Rule!

Use your credit. So satisfying.

Welcome to true crime satisfaction!

Tolerable when she wasn’t reading dialogue. Why did anyone allow her to botch the dialogue throughout the book? It’s so bad, I feel sorry for the author.

Narration unbearable

The story was compelling. So much so that it was hard for me to get to my daily tasks. I am new to this author being the true crime buff that I am, but I am certainly going to check out more of her works.

A Very Good Read

Solid story with a good narrator- Nothing that I was surprised at but still a good (but terrible) story-
My condolences to the victims of this terrible crime-

Pretty Good- No surprises but worth the listen-

The story was well written and interesting. The reader’s accents were distracting and inconsistent. When speaking normally she was fine but the characters sounded ridiculous.

Great Story, Bad Narration
