"Bloom where you're planted," is the advice Christine Bolz receives from her beloved Oma. But 17-year-old domestic Christine knows there is a whole world waiting beyond her small German village. It's a world she's begun to glimpse through music, books - and through Isaac Bauerman, the cultured son of the wealthy Jewish family she works for.

Yet the future she and Isaac dream of sharing faces greater challenges than their difference in stations. In the fall of 1938, Germany is changing rapidly under Hitler's regime. Anti-Jewish posters are everywhere, dissenting talk is silenced, and a new law forbids Christine from returning to her job - and from having any relationship with Isaac. In the months and years that follow, Christine will confront the Gestapo's wrath and the horrors of Dachau, desperate to be with the man she loves, to survive - and finally, to speak out.

Set against the backdrop of the German homefront, this is an unforgettable novel of courage and resolve, of the inhumanity of war, and the heartbreak and hope left in its wake.

What did you love best about The Plum Tree?

Beautifully written story

How could the performance have been better?

The narration was too fast - I kept checking the speed - seemed like it was on 1.5x. There could have been a lot more inflection- it is a gripping tale. Could have used a lot more differentiation between characters, male voices were generally poor

Any additional comments?

I almost stopped listening about an hour in due to the poor narration, but hung in there for the beautiful story, and I'm happy I did

Great story poor performance

Great story that I almost stopped listening to because of the narrator. I don’t mean to be critical, but she was terrible.

Strength and Courage through Hitler’s Reign

Powerful gut-wrenching tale! I found the narrator annoying, but tolerable enough to listen. Would still highly recommend. An important story about WWIi and its horrors.

Riveting!!! Couldn’t stop til it was over

Overall the story kept my interest. I kept listening because I wanted to hear the outcome, but I found it to be far fetched… also the narrator left a lot to be desired.

Usually love this author but….

I really enjoyed the story from
A German point of view. I HATED the narrator. You have to get someone else. It really took away from the quality of the experience

Bad narrator
