Another great war novel

Ralph Peters describes war as it is. Something that no human being should have to experience or witness, but the human race constantly defaults to war when disputes arise. No war could better be called a 'good war' than this one, and yet reading about the terror, carnage, gore, and bravery of the men involved in the Overland Campaign makes the reader truly pity the men who had to endure it. I can't even imagine how many soldiers on both sides suffered PTSD throughout the remainder of their lives, in a time when nobody knew how to treat it or even understood what it was. The Overland Campaign was a solid month of almost constant battle, constant frontal assaults against fortified positions with weapons that were far in advance of 19th century tactics, strategy and knowledge to heal. It's sad, but enlightening reading. Peter Berkrot is once again -- as in Cain at Gettysburg -- the perfect narrator. Highly recommended.

Overland campaign or the Wilderness campaign.

I must confess to my inability to completely follow every step as I have read it from history books. One huge downside was the ending. I realize there is another book to follow, but a little closure couldn't hurt. Pace felt rushed but details were intimate. Characters were real with emotional purpose. I felt more detached from these characters than from his previous novel. Still a good read.

Finally a book that can allow you to imagine what it was like to be there. No movie or book or documentary has been able to capture the ferocity and determination of both sides. Plus, the terrible condition of the men involved physically and mentally.
